About this ebook

Travis makes many mistakes after he learns he has autism because he is trying to fit in with neurotypicals. Travis begins to change every part of his life and every part of who he is in order to get his peers to like him. Years later he found that in trying to make others happy he lost a huge art of who he was. Now Travis is on a mission to find out who he is again by enjoying new things in life. Travis played the trombone growing up as a child. He was very good and had scholarships to major universities to play in their school of music. When Travis learned girls liked rock stars, drummers, and guitar players he gave up his trombone and gave it away to someone else. This is the biggest mistake that he ever could have made with autism because when he gave away that Trombone he gave away a part of who he was. Since then Travis has spent years trying to reclaim who he is. Read along as Travis goes on a journey to reclaim who he is and find a new trombone.

    About the Author

    Big Autism Mistake

The next morning after returning home from Indiana University in Bloomington I awoke to a lot of pressure. I didn’t have anything lined up back here at home as far as school or work went. I didn’t even know where to begin. I had some ideas though and I wanted to quickly put them into action. (I should note that sometimes people with autism or Asperger’s syndrome will often have great thoughts and ideas. Sometimes when we get these ideas into our head we want to act on them right away without thought.)

This was always the case for me. No matter how small or big the idea, I had to act on it fast. Before I chose to attend Indiana University in Bloomington I had strongly considered attending another university closer to home here in Northeast Indiana. Indiana Wesleyan University had been at the top of my list as far as a college choice.

There were many appealing characteristics about Indiana Wesleyan as I had sort of grown up in a Christian background and I did believe in God. I had attended church off and on as a child all the way up until my sophomore year in high school when I started attending regularly. I was attending more regularly in my later high school years due to the fact that I was able to play on the worship team and use my special interest of playing trombone to communicate with God. I loved to play worship songs of all kinds. From slow, soft, and soothing, to hard, fast, and crazy tunes.

Back in March of 2004 I had actually went over to Marion, Indiana where Indiana Wesleyan University is located to play an audition for the music faculty there. I was awarded a full scholarship which would help cover the cost of attending school at a private university. It wouldn’t come close to covering the entire cost but it did help to eliminate some concerns I had financially about attending the university.

In April of 2004, I decided to go to Indiana University in Bloomington. When I made that decision I was giving up my scholarship at Indiana Wesleyan. So, not only was I stuck back here at home now with no job and no place to go to school, Now I didn’t even have any kind of a scholarship to help cover the cost of attendance at Indiana Wesleyan.

Another reason in which I wanted to go to Indiana Wesleyan so bad was the fact that a gentleman by the name of Mr. Michael Flanagin was the director of instrumental music there. If you’ll remember, Mr. Flanagin was my old middle
