About this ebook

Some of these stories are experiences I have had, and some are fiction. We all make choices every day-what food we're going to eat, friends we'll make, how we speak to one another, whether we befriend a stranger, what we will wear, what movie or TV program we watch, what we'll do on the weekends, what school or college we will attend, what car we will buy, where we will live, what kind of pet we want, whether we want to eat dinner at a restaurant or have fast food, where will we vacation, what church we will attend, and what job we want. Life is made up of daily choices, and those choices make up our character and who we are as individuals. This book will hopefully help you make some of these choices in your own life. I made the choice to write this book, and with the encouragement of family and friends, I did.

    Choices - Marilyn Guier

    Chapter 1

I have been teaching a special class called Choices for fifteen years to students in their senior year of high school. I was a social studies teacher when I realized many students were not interested in learning, and so I came up with this idea of Choices. My students were not engaged in classroom discussions, spent time on social media on phones in class, hoping I would not see what they were doing, and were not completing assignments. Class is about listening and engaging with the teacher and each other, and when they are on their phones, they can’t do either one and therefore they can’t learn.

I went to the superintendent of the Cory School District, Dr. Sandiford, and said, We need to do something different.

His response was, Things are working just fine, and we do not have the money to start something new that has not been tested.

I have a strong personality, and that was not the answer I wanted.

After weeks of pestering him and explaining my plan, he finally said I could have this class for one year with no extra pay. I grabbed at the chance and started laying out my plans over the summer.

Many of my social studies students knew the answers to questions I asked but didn’t feel their answers were that important and refused to raise their hands or participate in class. So when I started this new class, I decided to give an A to any student who would participate by giving an answer when called upon. I called it An A for the Day, and class participation improved.

Fifteen years later, we have produced so many graduates and professional people, and I am so very proud of all of them. This will be my last year before I retire, and then I will pass the class on to another teacher. I will really miss working with these wonderful students. I have learned so much from them.

I’m ready for my final year of teaching these great students. It is so much fun to see them start the year not yet knowing what this class is all about and then to see them end the year with so much pride in themselves and with a renewed outlook on all the possibilities that life has to offer when they make good choices.

Today is August 15th, the first day of class. A whole new group of students will soon be in my classroom, wondering what the class will do for them. I have put a name tag on each desk and have a chart to help me identify each student. I know their thoughts will be What are we doing with name tags on our desks? We are not in grade school. It makes it easier and faster for me to learn their names.

Everything I do has a purpose, and I hope again this year to bring out the best in these new students.

    Chapter 2

"Good morning, class. I am Mrs. Andrews, and this class is about choices. Welcome to all of you, and please take the seat with your name on it. The name tags are for my benefit to learn your names faster, and in time you can remove them. I will enjoy getting to know each and every one of you. I really enjoy teaching this subject, and I hope that when the year is over, you will realize how your life can be great when you make good choices.

"Now I have written two phrases on the board. These phrases are ‘You can choose to make bad choices and you can have your picture in the paper with the world remembering you with hate and distaste’ or ‘You can choose to make good choices and you can have your picture in the paper and be remembered with honor and wonder.’ Now, open your notebooks and copy what is written on the board with your full name on the first line.

In this class you can earn an A for the day by answering some of the questions that I will ask of you. This will count as 30 percent of your total grade. When I give an A to a student, I will record that A beside your name on my list. Today we are going to talk about honesty. Who wants to tell me the definition of honesty? Nate, in your mind what is the definition of honesty?

    I think it’s being truthful.

Good answer, Nate. Give yourself an A for the day. Should someone be honest and truthful in all situations? Hannah?

    Yes, in reality they should.

Let’s say someone asks you if you think their artwork is great, but in your mind, you don’t really think it’s that great. Should you be honest and hurt their feelings or lie and say yes?

Well, I guess I’d say yes because I don’t want to hurt their feelings.

So you’re not being honest, right?

    I guess so.

Now the moment they ask you if their artwork is great, can you think of something honest to say to that person?

I guess I could say something nice about some of the things in the picture if I think that, and I suppose that would be an honest remark.

Give yourself an A for the day. So in most situations, we can be honest without hurting someone’s feelings. Suppose your teacher asks if you saw someone cheating on a test and the teacher knows you know who it is. Eric, what would you say to the teacher when asked who it is and it turns out this is a good friend?

Well, I don’t believe in cheating, but I don’t want to lose my friend. Let me think on this for a minute or two.

I could see that Eric was thinking hard for an answer.

I guess I’d have to say I know who it is, but I have to talk to that person first and then hope the teacher would let me do that.

So what would you say to your friend?

I’d say, ‘You have put me in a difficult situation, and I want you to let the teacher know what you did’ and hope he understands.

Good answer and an honest one. Give yourself an A.

We continued on for the rest of the hour, and I could tell this was going to be another great year.

Your homework for tomorrow is to write a paper about honesty and what it means to you. There’s the bell, class is dismissed.

    Chapter 3

I am ready for day two, and I hope my students are ready and prepared for another interesting day.

Good morning, class, today we are going to check on names of students. I know many of you already know each other’s names, but some of you are new so we will start off and see who knows whom. Ethan, what is the name of the student sitting in the third row fourth seat from the front?

    I don’t know him.

So how would you learn his name?

I guess someone would have to tell me.

Shane, how would Ethan learn that student’s name?

By getting up and looking at his name tag on his desk.

Give yourself an A for the day, Shane. Now when you students come to class each day, you are to learn everyone’s name in this room. The following week, I want you to be able to tell me one thing of interest about each person.

I had some of the students read their papers that they wrote about honesty, and I was amazed at what they wrote and I let them know I was very pleased with their papers. Some had written some interesting remarks.

    One student wrote,
