    Chapter One: Unexpected Visitor

I’ve long marveled over the ability of my dear cousin to simply state what has become a clearly confounding case for me before Her Majesty’s Courts.

He’s bedeviled, James. It is as certain as the man draws breath. Malcolm Soloman is of a mind that is not his own. ‘Tis the only explanation for one who pursues gentleladies through the park. Phineas allows an impish grin to fill his face as he awaits my response to his sudden assessment of my client’s disposition.

The poor creature is more than three scores and seven years old, cousin. Surely there is some degeneration within his mind. I cannot accept that there would be a devil upon him, however.

He screeches like a wild man in the park, sir. There has been no other in my memory who has done such a thing. The finer ladies of Southampton are less likely to visit there because of him. Phineas smirks. Plead for mercy and ask the judge to remove him to the asylum.

The asylum? I shake my head. Have you seen one of those places? Phineas, if ever there are devils anywhere, they are in an asylum. I cannot in good conscience allow my client to find himself inside one of them.

I have thought long and hard about what to say to His Honour during my defense of the irascible Malcolm Soloman. Dirty and disheveled, he lacks a proper home to call his own and turns to the streets for his sustenance. Malcolm seems a character ripe for the novels of Charles Dickens in the way he conducts himself in the public eye. Though I feel deeply for his plight in life, he is his own worst enemy in so many ways. He has been warned at least thrice to curb his response to the young society ladies in the park, but he has refused to do so. Now, it will be up to Judge Harold Ruston as to what punishment the aged man shall receive.

Do not feel so terrible, James. You will mount a hearty defense of the rube. Unfortunately for him, that defense will not suffice when stacked against his actions. Some are destined for prison and the workhouses.

I grimace while thinking of the awful conditions in the workhouses. It would be better for Mr. Soloman to find himself in the asylum rather than there. Of course, I could offer a plea to His Honour to look kindly upon the lowly creature, but I doubt it would do much good. No, the man will soon rot in prison or die in a workhouse for his minor offenses.

The door of our office opens and a man steps inside. I hear Ms. Christenson’s voice as she greets him and I get up from where I am sitting near my cousin’s desk. After making my way to the front, I am surprised to see a familiar man standing there.

    My eyes deceive me!

My dear friend, the tall man says to me as he smiles. His light brown eyes are framed by his wavy brown hair. It would be difficult to forget such a gentleman on my part as he is one of my oldest friends.

We embrace for a moment before pulling back and shaking hands. Phineas joins us at the front of the office and watches from his office doorway as I greet a man I have not seen in almost twelve years.

It has been so long, Jack. I grasp his hand tightly as we continue shaking. How have you been, sir?

Very well, he says in a French accent.

I turn and look at Phineas. My manners have left me this day. My apologies, sirs. Phineas Hutchins, this is my good friend from France, Jacques Rameau. I call him Jack as it fits my tongue much better. I smile and laugh as I watch my cousin shake his hand.

Phineas is my cousin and partner here, Jack. I pat him on the shoulder and then look over at Ms. Christenson. Tea, please, I say to her. She nods her head and rises to make a pot of tea for the three of us. Please, come this way. Rest with us. I lead him back into my office where I have chairs and a desk. We sit down together and I continue to try to imagine what would bring Jack to Southampton.

You seem surprised, Jack says with a smile. I am on leave, James.

On leave? Phineas says as he looks at him. Are you in your country’s service, sir?

Jack nods his head. "I am a capitaine
