About this ebook

THE 12 GOLDEN RULES OF EFFECTIVE MANAGEMENT

THAT IS, THE TRUTH ABOUT THE SURFER WHO KILLED A BEAUTIFUL DOLPHIN AND GOT REWARDED

Have you ever wondered if there are universal management rules that help managers avoid mistakes and failures?

I think that anyone who has ever managed even a small team has experienced failed projects or difficulties in making good decisions. As a management graduate, I collided with this harsh reality almost twenty years ago. I decided to spend the next decades trying to formulate as straightforward as possible rules to manage small teams and large corporations successfully.

This book (principles surrounded by an inspiring business story) is the result of the following:

  • more than fifteen years of research (one of which turned into a doctorate defended in 2016),
  • hundreds of hours of conversations with managers (during which I asked about their habits, best practices, and pieces of advice),
  • testing various kinds of solutions and ideas,
  • teaching at the university and conducting commercial training,
  • many years of experience in senior management positions in international organizations and industry leaders.

    ABOUT THE AUTHOR

    Chapter 1. The Surfer

Tommy entered the secretariat of the company he had been in charge of for almost two years. He wasn't the director of the entire firm, just one of its local branches, but he worked fully independently, which was a real source of pride for him. He walked sunk in his thoughts. There was one issue that couldn't give him peace of mind.

    'Hi, Surfer!'

He was greeted by the cheerful voice of Katie, who, as usual, radiated morning freshness and enthusiasm.

'Don't you remember my name?' He retorted. 'You know I can't stand to be called that.'

'Excuse me, boss,' she looked at him stunned. 'Maybe I'll make some coffee.'

Tommy felt stupid. He was mean to Katie unnecessarily. They cooperated well together; her energy and positive attitude often saved him when he was fed up with everything. She was a great assistant, and he realized he should promote her soon.

'No thanks, I drank at home, and if I take one more dose of caffeine, I'll go down with a heart attack. I'm not even thirty-five, so it would be a pity,' he joked to defuse the atmosphere somehow.

'OK,' she smiled. 'Do I understand correctly that today's trip to the capital raises your blood pressure naturally?'

'Exactly. I meet with the CEO only once a quarter, but I start stressing about the next visit right after the previous one ends.'

'Relax, he won't kill you. Your results are good.'

He felt angry again but decided to control himself. Katie didn't deserve his next outburst.

'Please, use ordinary language when you talk to me. You don't have to say: He won't kill you, it's enough to say: He won't fire you.'

'Aha, just that you know very well what guidelines we have. How was it formulated during the training?'

'"When we speak our own corporate language, we feel a deep
