Playing the long game

The VW scene is in a funny place at the minute. Values of what was originally intended to be the peoples’ car have skyrocketed beyond belief, especially those of pristine early examples. First time drivers who want an affordable daily to cut their teeth on now increasingly find themselves being forced into modern Citroën, Fiat and Ford city cars as most can no longer afford to buy, fix and insure something even as humble as a base model 1200 Beetle. It’s even worse if you want a decent example of VW’s box on wheels… Old lags blame the rising values on fresh blood coming into the scene and pushing the prices up.

And to some extent they’re right, because there are two distinct groups of VW owners these days – the old sweats who like to get their hands dirty and bolt their own projects
