    And now…

    Once upon a time…

    The Kingdom Eagle-Lion…

    The castle…

    In the kitchen…

Jane and Erosa had gone to the kitchen to prepare a very late or maybe a very early snack for themselves, Evi, Leale, Kochin, and the kitchen girl.  Tarkka and several of the male servants had escorted them there, and Jane and Erosa had just finished with the sandwiches and tea, and they were starting to leave the kitchen and head for Evi’s room when Erosa posed a question to Jane.

I have been meaning to ask you.  Why do you think the Jabberwocky sent you the dream? Erosa inquired as she stayed in the kitchen and leaned against a counter.  She had the tea cart in front of her, and she didn’t want to return to the bedroom just yet.  What they had to discuss was probably better spoken where Evi could not hear them.  Erosa was very worried about Maryann, her friend, who was missing and the prisoner of the Jabberwocky, that was if Maryann was still alive.

With all the chaos and trauma of the day, Jane had not noticed that Erosa had changed her attire.  Her friend was so pretty with long dark black hair and blue-green eyes.  Erosa had been wearing a gorgeous dark blue gown embroidered with vining roses along with matching shoes.  At some point, since they returned from the past, the past that had been revealed in which Moon Beast, Sun Beast, Erosa, and Jane had shared, Erosa had changed her outfit.  She was wearing an equally gorgeous green gown embroidered with roses along with matching shoes.  Her nails were polished the same gorgeous green color.  Jane was a little jealous of how beautiful her friend was compared to her and compared to her, Jane was plain or maybe an ugly duckling would be a better term.

You changed your outfit, Jane said, letting her feelings of inadequacy waddle away.  I never noticed.  When did you change?

It was right before I went to bed last night, Erosa answered.  I finally decided that I could use a new look.  I had been wearing those clothes before I was cursed, and I was so excited to be back in them, but it seemed appropriate to try something new.

I don’t remember you changing last night.

How could you? Erosa questioned, and then she stated with a grin, You were already passed out and drooling at the end of the bed.

I was not drooling, Jane insisted, and then she asked, Was I?

You were drooling quite a bit, Erosa replied, hiding a chuckle.

    I must have been exhausted.

Erosa said, I think you were very hungry.  I thought you mentioned something called a cheeseburger.

Oh… a cheeseburger, Jane repeated as she envisioned the all-beef sandwich with tomatoes, onions, and mayo.  I’ll need to eat one the next time a get a chance to eat another meal.  She got all excited or her stomach did as Jane said, I can use the Table of Plenty that you gave me.  I’ll also have french fries with it.  Now I’m really hungry.  We should get back so I can eat, Jane said and started to leave again when she thought of something, and she turned back and asked, What race of elf are you?  I’ve been meaning to ask you for so long, and it just popped into my head again.  You look slightly different than the race of elf that the castle servants and guards are.

I am not certain, Erosa replied.  I can clearly see my mother, and I nearly look exactly like her, but she never told me what race we are.

Jane thought about it, and as she envisioned Empress-Queen Glendriella standing on the Sky Balcony of the Towering Mountain Citadel, she asked, Is there such a race as Sky Elves?

There was, Erosa replied.  I heard that they were all destroyed long ago.

For some reason, I’m not sure of the reason, but the name just popped into my head, Jane admitted.  But for some reason, I believe you are a Sky Elf.  I’ll ask Empress-Queen Glendriella the next time I see her if she is a Sky…  She suddenly winced as Jane remembered her last encounter with her friend’s mother and how she nearly died several times.

Erosa noticed how Jane reacted when she mentioned the female elf who was supposed to be her mother.  Jane had told her some of what transpired the last time Jane met the Empress-Queen, but Erosa believed her friend was not telling her everything.  She decided not to press the issue just yet, and she said instead, Moon Beast, Sun Beast, the castle servants, and the castle guards are all Forest Elves.  She chuckled a bit, and then Erosa waved her friend over and said in a whisper so that Tarkka and the male servants would not hear, For a while, I and the Beasts thought you were a Rondel Elf because your ears were so short and had no point to them.

Jane reached up and touched her ears as she said, Really…  I didn’t know.

They both stood there in silence for a while, and then Jane grabbed hold of the sandwich cart.  She started for the bedroom.

Erosa repeated her question from earlier as if it was time to focus on their predicament again, Why do you think the Jabberwocky sent you the dream?  And why do you think it was a warning?  The dream showed a battle that you had nothing to do with.

Jane paused at the exit and replied, I’m not sure about the warning part.  She thought about the question some more, and then she admitted, But I’m pretty connected to curses.  I can command them to speak with me, so I believe with this connection, the Jabberwocky was able to connect with me.  As for the warning, maybe the creature wanted me to see something.  Either its might as it was able to defeat a large cannon-being.  Or…  I don’t know…  Or–

Jane!  Erosa! Sun Beast shouted as he rushed into the kitchen all in a panic.  His eagle blue eyes had the look of someone who had seen a terrible monster, and his lion mane was all tussled as if he had been in a fierce fight.  There were even a few leaves in his hair.  And his gaze… his gaze frantically looked around the kitchen and then fell upon Jane.  He continued, Quickly, we need your help!  The monster… the beast… it–

Something had caught his eye and greatly diverted his attention, and he questioned, Are those sandwiches?

Sun-B! Jane snapped very upset with him.  You scared us coming in here all shouting in a panic.  What do you want?  Has something happened?

Yes, it has, but the sandwiches, he replied, and then he asked, Is that roast beef that I see?

This time Erosa snapped as she spoke, Sun Beast tell us what has happened before you think of your stomach!  Your message seemed so urgent.  She grumbled under her breath, It better be urgent for the fright you gave us.

Of course, the message that my nightly half wanted me to urgently relay.  Moon Beast said to tell you… he spoke, paused, and then stated as if he should be the one angry with them, I had a time finding you two.  One servant said they had seen you in one of the libraries, so I dashed there, and then another servant said they had seen you two on the Lunar Snapdragon Balcony, so I sprinted there.  A third servant said you had gone to Evi’s room, so I ran there.  Leale said you would be here, so I mostly walked here because I am exhausted from running around the castle aimlessly.  Why are you here instead of Evi’s room?

Jane was still very upset with him, but when he asked the reason why they were in the kitchen, Jane sort of cringed as she was the reason.  She had startled everyone from sleep when she screamed because of her nightmare, and Jane started to answer, We’re here because–

Sun Beast re-noticed the sandwiches on the food cart Jane had a hold of.  His mouth watered as he took one and bit into it, and then he said through a mouthful, Food…  I am so hungry.  It has been a very long time since I have been this famished.  Patrolling the castle-estate looking for some vicious monster takes its toll.

He quickly took another bite of the half sandwich, and Jane frowned as that was the sandwich she had made for herself.  She felt like screaming at him, but she was still tired, and he sounded so hungry that she just let it slide with a grumble.

Sun Beast, Erosa spoke as she tried to contain her rage that her exhaustion didn’t seem to phase.  She
