    Mutt... Stray... Mongrel... That's what people called me after my master dropped me along the road one spring day. He had traveled four hours before saying good-bye with a kick to my hind end that sent me hurling out of his truck. I remember hitting the dirt road hard and breathing in limestone dust. We were near a beach, and I could smell the salty air and hear the sea gulls crying above me. I hurt all over, but managed to stand through the pain. The truck door had slammed shut by the time I got to my paws and limped back to the vehicle. The blood on my leg and shoulder were caked in white sand. I barked at my master, and a cigar butt flew out of the window and landed beside me. The truck pulled forward and made a U-turn. I never saw him again and, to this day, I still hate the smell of tobacco.

    See, my master had been using me for dogfights. I was real good. A two-year-old champion. I had won my first six battles with only minor injuries to show for it. In
