She-devil Of The Black Blood War

    Chapter One

    Zombie Mangiatore

Before the Zombie Mangiatore rose again…

Cara turned her gaze to the afternoon sky as she sat upon Black Fire.  She and her pair were still disconnected, but she didn’t feel as distant from him as she did when she had unfettered from him.  Maybe their connection was attempting to link again.  Maybe they only needed to…  Cara forced her mind from those thoughts as she had other more serious worries to fret about.

She watched Drac’On fly the She-devil and Escoute away from them.  It was almost like they knew something that her group did not.  Like Wyndfree, Cara didn’t understand why their foe stopped attacking.  It was very apparent they were no match for the She-devil of the Black Blood War.  Black Blood War… who or what was the enemy of the VanderBraze Kingdom to bestow such a sinister but very evident honor upon the woman to give her such an ominous name?

Cara tucked those questions in the back of her mind as she said, We should return to the nest and inform my mother of what has happened with the brother and sister from the VanderBraze Kingdom and what happened to the Mangiatore.  Modor will want to know–

A voice that sent shivers up Cara’s spine, a voice that reminded her of all the troubles she and Black Fire had faced during the Dragon Rite, spoke, not as a sinister ominous-producing voice as she expected he would but with sincerity and quizzical questioning, What happened to my son?

Wyndfree, HuntMa, Bold, Cara, and Black Fire all turned as if startled by a ghost.  Cara sensed the alarm of all the members of her… family…  Family, right in the middle of her scare, Cara realized everything she had gained.  She was no longer abandoned, neglected, alone…  She had people who cared and loved her.  Even HuntMa had become an older sister in the eyes of the once castoff one.  Hedi, the old female highlands wolfhound, had been the only creature Cara believed with all her heart loved her.  She wasn’t even sure if AabiLynn, her birth mother, loved her after what the Derkesthai, the dragons that lived in the tunnels and caves beneath the Cave of Derkesthai, had told her about her birth.  Cara thought about how easily AabiLynn abandoned her to them and left for seven days.  What mother would abandon her baby right after giving birth?

Those sad thoughts were quickly replaced with what Cara had gained while in Firedrake.  She had a tremendous burnt-orange dragon queen as her mother.  She had two… three… no four siblings that loved her since she now counted Bold and HuntMa along with Black Fire and Ortus as part of her family.  Wyndfree also cared deeply for her.  Cara had gained so much, and she wanted to protect everything she had gained.  Their love… it was a power in itself, and she wanted to allow her mind to linger in the sweet-sweet thoughts, but her family was in danger once again.

At first, Hlysnan’s voice floated about them as if he was a specter with no visible form, but then he emerged from the dead body of the Zombie Mangiatore as if he was about to haunt them or worse.

Hlysnan! Wyndfree shouted as she moved and protectively positioned herself between Cara and another foe.  The attendant would make sure no harm came to the girl who had become very dear to her.  Wyndfree angrily told him, You have a lot of explaining to do.

Ah…  Wyndfree… Hlysnan spoke very surprised as if something had caught him off guard and yet he was very pleased about it at the same time.  He was still wearing his scarlet robe embroidered with gold though now the dust of the region clung to it and the leather satchel that rested at his side.  Hlysnan asked the attendant, Were you not a human?  You are a Haast’Smilodon.  His gaze went distant as if he was thinking of something that happened a very long time ago as he stated, I love cats.  I once had one for a pet…  His gaze that held joy turned to one remembering a horror as he added, …but… unfortunately, it came to a dreadful demise.

HuntMa found his statement amusing and leaned to the attendant and said, Everyone seems to be picking on you this day trek.

Wyndfree turned to her, not in anger as she realized the Dragoon’Essenere girl was teasing her, and she couldn’t help but tease her back as she asked, Do you not still owe me a life debt?

HuntMa grumbled, You only brought that up to pick on me.  And here I was starting to feel sorry for you, but you only like to share in your misery when you are picked on.

Wyndfree smiled and with that smile, the attendant found she had gained something over the time she spent with Cara and Black Fire.  She wanted to deny and yet embrace it at the same time for Cara was not the only one who had gained a new family.  Cara was not the only one who had felt abandoned and alone, but Wyndfree had felt this way for a very long time.  When she had lost her pair, Meolc the Ivory Dragon Queen during Drac’Nog, she had also lost her entire family.  Now it would seem that she had gained a new family.  Cara latched onto her and wouldn’t let go, and the child of Man brought many people with her.  HuntMa was one of those people.  Wyndfree didn’t completely trust the Dragoon’Essenere girl, but HuntMa had still become… dare Wyndfree think a friend?

I do like to torment you, the attendant admitted.  And you make it so easy to do so.

Not everyone was in a joking mood.  Black Fire wouldn’t let his thoughts think of pleasant things.  He moved closer to the Ex-Venetian Red Scribe and questioned him, Why are you trying to kill Cara?

The murky-black hatchling thought about attacking the man who was responsible for either conjuring or bringing the terror of the Mangiatore to his nest.  Black Fire knew if he did destroy Hlysnan in haste, they may never learn who was behind trying to kill Cara and who the Ring of Dominar, that Ados had used against his nest, belonged to.

Well… are you not the big dragon now, Hlysnan spoke, sizing up the murky-black brute, and then he asked as he realized something, When did you start to talk?  So many new things have happened since I left Firedrake.  Please… fill me in.  I do like to know everything that goes on in my favorite dragon nest.

Hlysnan wasn’t alone.  Adjutor, the lime-green Minik’Ejderha Dragon, emerged from the Mangiatore as if he was a reluctant ghost and went and stood beside the once-scribe.

Adjutor questioned, Why are we still here?  You are minus a son and minus a very large weapon.  Should we not be fleeing?  A loud strong wind came by and defended their conversation from the group that was some distance in front of them.  Adjutor continued, I do not wish to die.  I still need to kill you and your king.

Adjutor, Hlysnan scolded the lime-green dragon.  You should not say such things in front of others.  People might think that you do not like me.

Like you?  Like you? Adjutor repeated as he forced himself not to shout.  I hate you and I loathe your king.

I know, but still…  You should not let others know of our family squabbles, Hlysnan told him.

We are not a family, Adjutor yelled at him as he lost any control he had over his emotions that were already boiling.  We shall never be a family.  We are nowhere near being a family.

Now you are just being mean, Hlysnan said, paused, and then spoke, You had asked me a question before, no, several questions.  What were they?

Adjutor sighed as the one he was bound to by slave-to-will always did this to him.  The lime-green dragon calmed himself as he found it never did him any good to get upset, and then he asked with less urgency than before, Why are we still here?  You are minus a son and minus a very large weapon.  Should we not be fleeing?  I do not wish to die.  I still need to kill you and your king.

The wind died down as Hlysnan began to speak.
