Chapter One
Venetian Red Scribe Hlysnan
The exploits of one wayward scribe…
Hlysnan had been very busy. He had, known by none, followed Cara and Black Fire when they left Firedrake some time ago to try and escape Ados and the other Venetian Purple Scribes after they had attempted to cleave her from her pair. With his Dark Raven Quill and Convey Scroll, he recorded all those events and the events with their attendant, Wyndfree. It became known that Wyndfree was a Haast’Smilodon, a sub-species of Triad Shapeshifters. The treacherous Wyndfree had suggested that Black Fire fly away with a mirage of Cara on his back so that the Venetian Purple Scribes would chase after him. Wyndfree then waited until the murky-black hatchling couldn’t see them anymore, and she pushed Cara off the cliff. Hlysnan had a very difficult time tracking down Cara after that point, but he did come across her while she and a young Dragoon’Essenere girl named HuntMa tracked down Black Fire. Cara was reunited with her pair at the Haast’Smilodon village within the Valley of Derkesthai. Hlysnan hated that he couldn’t write of the exploits of Black Fire after he had flown away with the imaginary Cara or what the treacherous Wyndfree had done after she betrayed Cara to a supposed watery death. He was very glad they were all back together and followed them as Cara, Black Fire, HuntMa, Wyndfree, and many of the Haast’Smilodons from the village went in search of some great weapon. No one even knew Hlysnan was following them through the woods but then something unforeseen happened. While Wyndfree and another Haast’Smilodon named CrawlFur retrieved a sword embedded in a large green crystal, everyone in the group suddenly disappeared. Hlysnan searched several days within the cave system, but he never found any signs of Cara, Black Fire, Wyndfree, HuntMa, or any of the other Haast’Smilodons. He decided to return to Firedrake and just arrived at the entrance, and he was tired, thirsty, and hungry.
Hlysnan entered and came across a wounded dragon and his rider tending to him just inside the Large Sand Gate, one of the main entrances into Firedrake. The Large Sand Gate was named so for at one time a great gate guarded over the entrance into the dragon nest as great gates had guarded over all the other entrances into Firedrake. Time, peace, and neglect had left it no more than a large opening between two crumbled walls of sandstone. Hlysnan removed his Convey Scroll and started to pull out his Dark Raven Quill but decide against it. He would hate to have to kill the pair if they saw the forbidden quill, so Hlysnan removed his Blazing Quill and began transcribing the events as he saw them.
What happened here?
Hlysnan questioned.
A group of Dragoon’Esseneres attacked our nest,
the dracoman replied as he glanced back at the man. You are a Venetian Red Scribe, so you know the art of healing. Quickly… tend to my pair. His injuries are great.
Let me see,
Hlysnan said as he moved closer and examined the wound in the dragon’s side. The scribe never stopped writing with his quill as he spoke, It is a very nasty wound, and I am afraid to say that I was never trained in the art of healing. All I can do for you and your pair is add your plight as a footnote in my recordings.
The dracoman turned as he uttered, Footnote..?
The scribe had already turned by then and was heading into Firedrake’s tunnels. The dracoman would have pursued him and gave him a good thrashing, but he didn’t want to leave his pair. Hlysnan made his way through Firedrake’s tunnels, staying out of the way of dragons and dracoriders as they rushed to their posts to fend off the invaders. He spotted who he guessed was one of the Dragoon’Esseneres and followed him to the Queen’s Chamber. Hlysnan stayed by the door and watched as the Dragoon’Essenere known as BoneCrusher took on the queen and her guards. The scribe had never witnessed the power of a Dragoon’Essenere and watched with growing interest as BoneCrusher treated the dragons, dracomen, and the queen as if they were meek kittens. Hlysnan moved away from the door and climbed up a side wall and found a place to sit on a very tiny ledge that no normal man could sit on. He always preferred to look down at things when transcribing them.
BoneCrusher defeated all the male dragons and their riders and turned to focus all of his attack on the queen when Cara and Black Fire showed up. Hlysnan was so excited. He thought he had lost track of Cara and Black Fire forever. He stowed his Blazing Quill since no one would probably take notice of him way above them, and he removed his Dark Raven Quill. Hlysnan would take the chance that someone might look way up. He had to record this event for his king. The Dark Raven Quill produced a magical cloud of inky smoke that cast darkness upon him as Hlysnan activated it. It was a very good cloak at night and in places of darkness, but it was still day trek and a lot of light came into the Queen’s Chamber. Hopefully, with all the commotion below, no one would look up and see the cloud of inky smoke. He only had to wait a little longer for the advancing darkness for the night trek was approaching and would soon fall upon them all. Hlysnan paused as he liked that thought. It was appropriate for the moment and appropriate for what was coming for all of Athenia. Angry voices from below brought him back to the moment. His feet rocked back and forth as he continued to record the events below. His king would be very pleased that he found the plebe pair, very pleased indeed.
Cara stood within the Queen’s Chamber with her pair Black Fire. Modor, the queen of the dragon nest, fought a fierce warrior named BoneCrusher. He wanted to kill an Athenia Dragon Queen and claim all of her power as his own. BoneCrusher, the short but very muscular Dragoon’Essenere, wore a mask over his mouth made from a small dragon's jaw, and green-inked tattoos marked his face so that he always looked enraged. He had already killed or severely injured all her guards. Cara and Black Fire had been separated from Wyndfree and HuntMa. Black Fire urged his pair to use her esspell to fight the Dragoon’Essenere, and he would protect her with his fangs and claws. Cara wasn’t sure what she could do against such a powerful foe, but she would face BoneCrusher along with her pair. She started to think about what sort of attack she might use against the Dragoon'Essenere when BoneCrusher suddenly leapt across the room like some puma and thrust his lance into Black Fire's chest. Cara stood there stunned. She heard what sounded like bones breaking, and she feared the worse. The Dragoon'Essenere's lance struck Black Fire, and Cara screamed as she felt her pair's fear and pain. Black Fire stumbled back a few steps as he grabbed the lance with his talon. Black Fire was able to with his quick reaction to grab the lance and keep it from going too deep, but BoneCrusher still poisoned him. BoneCrusher withdrew his weapon, and the murky-black hatchling moved further back from him. Cara ran over to her pair as fast as she could, and the Dragoon’Essenere moved in to kill both of them. BoneCrusher raised his lance but before he could deliver another attack, Modor rushed at him and swiped at him with her massive tail, sending him hurling into a wall across the huge chamber.
Black Fire,
Cara called out and immediately put her hand to his wound. She already knew about the poison, so she healed his wound as she expelled the poison.
He watched BoneCrusher as his pair healed him. Black Fire knew the way he was now he would be no match for the Dragoon’Essenere. His fangs and claws were not enough. What good was an Athenia Dragon who couldn’t use esspell?
BoneCrusher slowly rose to his feet very shaken and stunned by the dragon queen’s attack. He had been careless and turned his back on a dragon. BoneCrusher wouldn’t make the same mistake again. He needed to deal with the queen first, and then he could capture the crippled girl as was his mission. He focused some of his dragon water magic on the queen, collected what moisture was in the air, and created a whip made of water. The whip wasn’t as large as he had hoped, not enough water in the dry area of Firedrake, but it didn’t mean he couldn’t use it against the tremendous burnt-orange dragon queen. He lifted his lance and used it as the handle to his water-whip.
Modor had seen her son and daughter in peril and had moved in for the kill, but the Dragoon’Essenere’s armor had protected him from the impact of the wall. The Dragoon’Essenere whipped water at her and cut her across her dragon hide. Modor screamed for the pain and came at him with her own magic. A torrent of wind moved through the chamber and fought against the water whip. Modor’s esspell was stronger, and it started to separate the water and disburse the whip all together, but Dragoon’Esseneres developed special technics overtime and had a special magic to combat dragons. BoneCrusher touched the green-inked tattoo of a dragon sitting and holding a sun. A bright light, bright as the sun, shot out from him and blinded Modor before she could move in for the kill. BoneCrusher whispered something to his lance, and it grew spikes all over its tip. He threw the weapon, and it hit the blinded dragon queen in her chest, and she screamed out again in pain. She pulled at the weapon, but
