    What is hypnosis

This is one of the most common questions any hypnotist will be asked. As with all things hypnosis there is more than one school of thought. There are lots of opinions about what exactly hypnosis is here are the most common.

A highly relaxed and receptive state of mind.

    An altered state of consciousness

A splitting of the conscious and unconscious mind

    A form of waking sleep

    A meditative state.

So you see there is no one answer to the question what hypnosis is. One thing in which all of us are in agreement is that it is a natural state which all humans are capable of achieving.

Another school of thought takes a completely opposite view. They say it does not exist at all and that hypnotised people simply play along with the hypnotist, just like game show contestants play along with ridiculous suggestions of the host.

For the purposes of this book, I think the best description is that hypnosis is a state of mind where the hypnotised person may respond more favourably to suggestions than in a normal waking state, regardless of the technical reasons.

That is not to say that they are zombies complying mindlessly with whatever a hypnotist says, it means that they may be more receptive to positive verbal input.

In fact negative suggestions will be either rejected or modified to suit the hypnotee.

Having looked at what hypnosis is, it’s worth just saying here what hypnosis isn't.

It’s not mind control, even someone acting like an idiot on stage knows what he is doing. The hypnotist is not 'in control' of the hypnotee. This myth is generated by film and TV for entertainment reasons only.

It’s not dangerous in and of itself. Any dangers that may be present during hypnosis will be physical dangers. Slip
