    Chapter 1

Why am I what I am?

It is the story of a prostitute, in her own words.

You can call me by any name, a bad woman or a prostitute. I have never been seen with respect in society.

All kinds of customers come to me, and from them I have learnt a little bit of English.

I live in a district within a radius of about 15 km of Mumbai.

If you search on the computer by entering the word Red Light Area near Mumbai, then this area of mine will be easily found. In my area, about 800 women are engaged in this business.

Although we remain isolated from society, we keep up with the news, from surgical strikes to EVM scams, from stone pelting in Kashmir to rapes of women in Naxalite areas.

In your clean society, there is a great desire to know about our lives. Like, what is our past? How did we come to this swamp? What is the tone of our conversation?

Our clothes, our untouchable life, our customers, and our fear of being HIV patients, you want to know everything.

Some people think that this business is the best way to earn money easily. People think that we have come to this profession voluntarily.

I want to know one thing that you can ask any ordinary woman about. If a man looks at you in the wrong way, how angry do you become? How uncomfortable do you feel?

A prostitute like me, before entering this profession, hated the stares men gave me, so how can you imagine that I now enjoy being a part of this profession?

A woman likes being a daughter, sister, mother, daughter-in-law, mother-in-law, and grandmother, but she never wants to be called a prostitute!

My story can be summed up in one sentence:

After the death of my parents, my maternal uncle sold me to a brothel in Bombay, where I have already spent twenty years of my life, every day offering my body to several customers, where I contracted this dreaded disease, and where I will be thrown out onto the streets to die as a beggar woman who is an HIV patient!

    Chapter 2
