    Chapter One

Reno sat drinking his cognac, watching the girls work the room. The nightclub was a step up from the places where he usually looked for women.

What are you doing here, babe? the voice said.

Reno looked at the half-grown woman to whom the voice belonged.  He could tell she was an addict; the scars on her arm told a story about her life and she could use a couple of home-cooked meals.

Take this card. It’s people I know that can help you get out of this place, Reno said, shoving the card and cash into her g-string.

Baby, what makes you think I want out of this life, the woman smiled.

Reno could see the hopelessness in her eyes. That’s bullshit. I’m giving you a way out, if you don’t take it then it’s your own fucking fault.

You’re an asshole, the woman snapped with little emotion, turning to step off. She stopped for a second, No bullshit?

No bullshit, Reno said, swishing his cognac around in his glass. Reno watched the woman’s eyes fill up with tears. She looked about sixteen years old at that moment.

They’ll kill me if I even think about leaving, the woman whispered, her hands shaking from the fear of running.

If you want to leave now, I’ll take you right out of this place, Reno smiled. He knew what his smile looked like to others...it looked like he was crazy. Most people would agree with the description, especially after spending time with him.

Are you fucking crazy? the woman asked.

Yep. Are you going now or later? If you pick later, it’s going to be harder. I can take you now, Reno said. He watched security the last couple of days, he knew exactly when it was safe for them to leave unnoticed.

Okay, I want to go, the woman whispered, quickly sweeping the room.

We’re leaving now, Reno said, finishing his cognac. He grabbed her hand before she had a chance to reconsider. They moved quickly, avoiding the main entrance and exiting through a side door that was rarely used.

How did you know the door was here? the woman asked.

There’s always a way out if you look, Reno said. He ushered the woman into his truck, pulling his phone from his pocket. Reno waited for the person on the other line to answer. Yeah, I need your help. I know it's two o’clock in the morning, but that’s when strip clubs are open. Okay, I’ll bring her to the office. Tell Sarah I’m sorry for disturbing you guys.

Where are you taking me? the woman asked.

I’m taking you to a colleague of mine, he’ll help you move to another town and get a job, Reno said. Hopefully, that will be enough information for the woman to stop talking. Reno didn’t like people. He doesn’t talk much and the constant shaking of this woman was getting on his nerves. The woman finally sat back and kept her mouth shut.

James was furious. Reno didn’t work for Phoenix Securities, but felt James should drop everything to help him out. He parked his car next to Reno, who slowly slid his window down. James half expected him to wear the dark glasses that were his normal day fashion.

This better be good, James said.

It is. This woman needs to be moved to another city, with both a job and a place to live, Reno said.

James jumped out of the car, motioning for Reno to follow, he wanted to talk privately.

What the hell do you think I am? I don’t have unlimited funds just to move a woman that you found at the drop of a hat.

I’m not expecting you to fund it, I just need someone to do it. I’ve opened an account that you have access to. The money in there can be used to help the women start a new life, Reno said.

Why the hell would you do that? James asked.

What? You don’t want it? I figured you were a do-gooder and all that, Reno smirked.

Where did the money come from? James asked, not sure he wanted an answer.

"Tsk, tsk James. I’m not sure you want to know that answer,’ Reno smirked.

James knew that was the truth. If Phoenix
