    Chapter One

Theo Lord and the rest of the group were from Fire Station #10, Liberty, Massachusetts’s one and only fire department in town. It was a Saturday night and the firemen had just saved an apartment building, and they all decided to blow off some steam at the local bar, Griffin’s Pub.

Yo, Theo, I heard it could have been a bad one today. Jett Blackstone, the tattoo artist that he used, was sitting at a table eating dinner with his girlfriend, Jazz Quinn. Theo had heard they had recently found out they were going to have a baby. But he hadn’t had a chance to congratulate them because of the Thanksgiving holidays.

Yea, man it was crazy. Luckily, there was hardly anyone there because of the start of the Christmas Festival of Lights in the park was going on at the same time. A few older people and some pets.

Theo grabbed a chair and sat down at the table. Well, I heard congratulations are in order for you, also. I heard y’all were going to have a baby.

Now how the hell did you know about that? Jazz asked. Then it dawned on her and at the very same moment, Kat..., they both said her sister’s name, laughing out loud.

Yea, your sister, Kat was yelling at her boss during the Thanksgiving rush at the emergency care center, something about having a niece or nephew next year, and she wasn’t fuckin’ working any holidays. Theo laughed as he told Jazz about the scene her sister made.

The emergency care center was right next to the fire station, so Theo knew Kat quite well and knew she could be very feisty.

Jazz put her head in her hands and shook it, I’m going to kill her.

Jett kissed her on the top of her head, It’s all good, babe, she loves you.

Jazz gave him this look. I know, but she wants to use our child to have fucking holidays off. Who does that?

Theo and Jett laughed. Jazz smiled and pushed Jett with her shoulder. She’s lucky that I love her.

Hey, Theo get your ass over here, so we can celebrate, the other firefighters yelled at him as they were passing the pitcher of beer around.

I’ll see you guys around. Theo started to get up from the table.

Don’t forget to bring Lily to the children’s sculpting class on Wednesday night, Jazz reminded Theo as he headed toward the other firemen.

I won’t...Wait a minute Jazz, she is going to have to miss that class because I’m meeting her new second-grade teacher about a science project. Theo turned around quickly to look at her.

What happened to Mrs. Clay? asked Jazz.

She had her baby over Thanksgiving holidays, and she is going to be out until at least February. So, I will bring Lily the following Wednesday, Theo told her. She’s at mom’s tonight so I have a night off for a change.

Have a good evening guys, and congratulations again on the baby. Theo waved at Jett and Jazz as he walked over to the other guys.

    ***

Theo was sitting with the group of firemen nursing a beer. He wasn’t like most of the other firemen. He was a single father and couldn’t be irresponsible when it came to making choices after a hard day at the fire department. Lily, his daughter, was the most important thing in his life and she already lost her mother. Lillian, his wife, had died in childbirth. That’s who Lily was named after. She was a second grader now, full of spark.

Come on baby, let me take you home tonight. Theo looked toward the bar and saw Joey, a younger firefighter, messing with a beautiful girl working behind the bar.

Handsome, even if you took me home, there would be no way that you would be performing anything tonight. This beautiful woman handed it right back to Joey.

All the other firemen started laughing and Joey shook his head. Babe, you hurt me so bad.

Theo had to smile; he could tell that this girl could handle herself. She had a smile that lit up the room and watching her joking with the other guys made her so beautiful. Leaning across the table, Hey J-man, who is the beautiful girl behind the bar? Theo asked.

Theo, that’s Jim Griffin’s daughter, Sarah. She just finished up at college and she’s back home working the bar until she gets a job. J-man answered without even taking his eyes off the big screen television.

    Theo couldn’t stop watching her.

    ***

Sarah Griffin felt his eyes on her all night. She didn’t know who he was, but she wanted to know him. She grabbed one of the regular bartenders. Hey, Bailey, who is that sitting at the other end of the room, just staring at the bar?

Bailey looked up. That’s Theo, he moved back here while you were gone at college. He is a few years older, so I don’t know if you guys knew each other in school. He is this amazing guy. He’s single, but is totally devoted to his daughter, Lily. I think she is in first or second grade.

Sarah continued to stare at him. What happened to his wife?

Bailey grabbed a beer for a customer. I think she died when Lily was very young, but I don’t know the full story. He is just a good guy.

Sarah nodded her head, That’s right, I wasn’t living here when it happened. Dad told me what happened, as Bailey moved down the bar taking orders. She continued to take orders and every so often would catch Theo staring at her. When she did, he tipped his bottle toward her and smiled.
