Introduction
Pickleball started in Seattle, Washington, in 1965 from the home of Joel Pritchard. The family of Joel Pritchard used it as a form of family entertainment and his guest, Bill Bell, also participated. The two can, therefore, be referred to as the game's founders. Pickleball is a paddle or racket sport with its inspiration coming from several racket sports, including badminton, tennis, table tennis, etc.
Two to four players hit a perforated polymer ball using a solid paddle. The player has to hit the ball over a net spread upright in the middle of the court. The two to four players are paired against each other on the opposite sides of the net.
The ball used in the game is perforated. As a result, it moves slowly. The players serve the ball underhand and it must be served without first bouncing it on the court. The player must also serve diagonally to the service zone of the opponents on the other side of the net. Point scoring in the game only goes to the serving side; the serving side gets points when the opponent cannot return the ball or hits the perforated ball out of bounds. The server will continue to serve and amass points until they fail to serve well. The first side that amasses up to 11 points will win the game.
History and characteristics of pickleball
The ball looks like a wiffle ball and has 26 to 40 round holes. There is a strong similarity between the court used for Pickleball and badminton. The net used for Pickleball, on the other hand, looks like that of lawn tennis. Its paddles look like those used in table tennis. The team members can be one a side or two a side, depending on the category of events taking place. Pickleball is, therefore, a game of unification. The game requires a large space, just like lawn tennis. However, it can be played indoors or outdoors, provided there is adequate space for the indoor game.
The game is regulated by the International Federation of Pickleball and has gone places after its first introduction to the world in 1965. The game's popularity is due to the ease of setup. Aside from the adequate space for the game, you will also need to get some other equipment, like a net, wooden paddle, and plastic Pickleball. Pickleball has become an international game over the decades. However, it has never featured in any global sports event, like the Olympics, Paralympics, and World Games. Expectations are rife, nevertheless, that the game will still gain adequate popularity to count it worthy of a place in any of these international sports events.
While the game has gained global popularity over the years, it was only recently adopted as Washington's official state sport in 2022. The game's name came from the word Pickles
, derived from Pritchard's cocker spaniel. The spaniel consistently ran off with the ball each time it landed off the court. The game later spread beyond Pritchard's home to the neighborhood, with many of his neighbors taking an interest. A corporation protecting the game was formed in 1972, leading to further growth of the game, especially in the Seattle area. The game became popular in colleges and high schools. It also became a popular game in parks and recreation associations. The official promoter of the game in the United States is the United States of America Pickleball Association. The outlet is also responsible for governing the game.
The major factor that led to Pickleball's popularity was its acceptance at YMCA facilities, retirement communities, private health clubs, public parks, physical education classes, and community centers.
It has now spread like wildfire through the United States, with thousands of tournaments held yearly, some of which are:
● Major League Pickleball
● U.S. Open Pickleball Championships
● U.S. Pickleball National Championships
Its spread is not only felt in the United States, but also spreads to the international community, with several international championships being held yearly.
Before Pritchard invented Pickleball, the family had tried
