Body Power Swing - Bill Lawson

    FOREWORD

Bill Lawson is the author of three books on golf.

They are presented as a completely unique alternative to conventional golf techniques. The method is much simpler to learn and works for all handicap levels. The first two books introduce the student golfer not only to a different technique, but to an entirely new way of thinking about the golf swing.

This third book in this series is not only a reprise of many of the ideas presented in the first two books, but endeavours to reduce the swing technique to a simple formula, which makes the playing of golf a simple procedure both mentally and physically.

It shows and describes why conventional teaching, although conscientiously presented and taught by professional teachers, often fails to succeed – particularly with handicap players at all levels. It offers an alternative technique, which is so simple that it makes it almost impossible to mishit the ball, no matter which club the player is using.

Bill has set out to try to find a swing which could be repeated virtually ad infinitum, and in this he has succeeded. Try the method and judge for yourself.

The author, age 71, shows that age is no detriment to having

a huge body coil – using his own method. Scoring a 71 at 71!

    Chapter 1

    INTRODUCTION

Golf, over the past 100 years or so, has developed into a global phenomenon. Since the early 20th century when the first great golfers trod the fairways, the level of audience participation has also increased. Now millions of club and recreational golfers enjoy playing and competing at club level, further enhancing the sport’s popularity.

Golf is a sport with which it is easy to become obsessed. I should know, because although I had never picked up a club until reaching the age of 24, I have remained one of the game’s fanatical followers. When first attempting to play golf, I discovered that the fairly simple-looking swing technique was incredibly difficult to replicate. I eventually sought out a local professional. After several lessons and many hours of practice, I eventually managed to reduce my handicap to 4.

I did, however, find the handicap difficult to maintain – and as the years progressed, the handicap slowly escalated, along with my age. I started working on my technique again and decided to treat myself to more professional tuition, but all to no avail. I simply could not reduce my handicap, which had crept up to double figures. At that point, a thought crossed my mind: Could conventional methods be faulty? Or was simply it a case of a bad workman blaming his tools?

Then something happened which was to totally change my approach to golf. My other great interest in life is music. While I was out socialising with my friends one weekend, a professional organist who was performing at a local venue started chatting to me. I complimented him on his excellent performance and told him that one of my biggest regrets was not learning to play keyboards or piano when I was young. His reply was that music had no age barriers and that provided no physical or medical condition was preventing the fingers from being reasonably flexible, anyone of any age could study and learn music. He himself specialised in teaching adults and would be happy to add me to his list of students.

I took him up on his offer and discovered his method was unique and simple to use – much easier than conventional teaching methods. It eliminated all the painstaking learning of scales and notations, and created a simplified musical formula which produced almost immediate results. After studying and practising this music technique, I began to wonder whether golf could also be played in a simple fashion. It was by using my professional knowledge of anatomy, combined with an elementary physics principle, that I developed a technique much simpler than conventional golf techniques. This
