    Gideon lived in a period very similar to our own in the sense that the doctrine of 'do your own thing' was rife.

    The consequences for the nation of Israel were that God permitted their enemies to conquer-them. The hardships and privations that followed brought them to their knees (Judges 6:7). In response to their petitions God raised up a deliverer, Gideon.

    Gideon was a most reluctant candidate for this role (Judges 6:15) but is given the assurance of God's presence (v.16) and the miraculous disappearance of the food convinces him that this is God's will for him.

    He recognises that his first action must be one of open defiance to the local gods. Baal must be shown
