To Miss Gentz, the
teacher who made me love writing
1
Three months earlier….
J UWELL CUT THROUGH the vines. He was in the middle of a jungle, with thick foliage scattered along the ground. With every step he took, his foot sank deep into the mud, leaving behind a deep footprint. He crouched down behind a rock, his back scraping against the hard rough surface of the rock.
As he looked over the rock, he instantly ducked again. He saw two guards, each wearing a short sword, clear to any enemy who came too close, and a crossbow cradled in each one of their arms.
Juwell started sweating in the sticky, humid air. One of the guards held up his hand, both of them stopping instantly. The guard holding his hand up crept forward cautiously. He got to the rock Juwell was hiding behind. Juwell was crouching, afraid that his legs would give way at moment and give him away.
The guard looked over the rock and saw nothing. He signalled to his friend, who nodded and proceeded walking. Thank goodness, Juwell thought, that the guard didn’t look down.
Juwell picked up his staff, the only weapon he had with him, and tapped it twice on the ground. He appeared to freeze, then an exact copy of himself walked out of himself. He had created a clone.
Juwell nodded, and the clone seemed to know exactly what Juwell wanted. It nodded back slowly, then Juwell gave the clone his staff.
The clone ran from behind the rock, making no attempt to stay hidden, then yelled out. The two guards that had passed Juwell earlier heard the shout and came rushing outside.
I knew there was someone here.
Muttered the one that had put his hand up first. We have an attacker!
he yelled out.
Instantly, five guards who were chatting at the temple entrance turned around. They saw the clone waving his staff around, and charged at him with their cross bows.
As soon as they were within striking distance of the clone, they opened fire. One of the arrows hit the clone in the leg, another in the arm, but instead of blood coming out, it was a green mist that evaporated into the sky.
The guards didn’t seem to notice that they had been tricked until they hit the clone in the heart. It stumbled back a bit, trying to maintain balance, but then saw Juwell had safely made it to the temple entrance.
The clone’s duty had been fulfilled and he simply smiled as the next arrow hit him in the forehead.
The guards had lowered their crossbows when they had hit him in the head and heart. They watched on in astonishment as the clone waved goodbye, then vaporised into green mist. His staff stayed floating in the air for a few seconds, then came falling down to the ground with a thud.
Meanwhile, Juwell turned the corner. He knew the entire layout of the temple and knew exactly where he was going. He turned left, then right, then right again and arrived in a big room. The pillars on either side of the room were made out of marble, but over the years had crumbled away to look more like cobblestone. As he took a step forward, he felt something fly near his head. He ducked instinctively, avoiding an axe that flew across the room.
He made careful steps after that, leaping and dodging, crouching and running. Sometimes it was just that luck was on his side.
As he made his way to the other side of the room he found what he was looking for.
A pedestal elevated a gem off the ground. He reached out and grabbed it. It felt cold in his fingers, as he weaved it in and out, then holding it in his palm. He muttered a single word.
Yes..
As he manoeuvred the gem around his fingers, he dropped it. However, he was not concerned about it breaking. He was concerned about what would happen after it hit the floor.
As it touched the floor, the thunk of it hitting ground echoed throughout the hall. Just as he had expected, the ground started to shake. The floor next to him caved into a dark abyss next to him. He jumped for safety, and luck was on his side again. Just as he jumped, the floor beneath where he was just standing caved in.
He ran
