Wounded Carnivores

HARRY WOLHUTER, ONE of the first game rangers in the Sabi Nature Reserve (now part of the Kruger National Park) recalls how careless oversights, when loading and securing his rifle very nearly led to his demise at the hands of wounded lionesses.

Wolhuter is renowned for having stabbed for having stabbed a on to death with his hunting knife after it had knocked him off his horse at dusk and was dragging him off into the veld. The knife he used and the lion’s skin is on display at the Skukuza museum. The ordinary six-inch bladed butcher’s knife was manufactured by T Williams of Smithfield, London.
