CHAPTER 1
Paul
As I searched inside an old shoe box I found the following notes written by Paul. The written account described the strange birth and the challenges faced during his childhood.
I read, It was the winter of 1964 when the Beatles appear on the Ed Sullivan show in New York City. The opening ballot, All My Loving, generated a flood of emotions from the young crowd. The audience flipped out when the four mop heads hit the stage. Their charming looks and their presence mesmerized the crowd out of control. Thundering screams and sobbing cries filled the theater. My brother and sister were glued to the screen listening to John, Paul, George and Ringo sing their second song Till There Was You.
I was born, in the middle of the song, as my mother pushed me out into the world, my dad was so dazzled by the four Liverpoolers’ performance that he baptized me Paul. I was a healthy seven pound newborn, being raised in a small town in the Eastern Townships of Quebec. Three days after my birth my mother discovered that I was born without an anus. I tried to get her attention by weeping and whimpering the blues. The awful feeling of being clogged, blocked, held back, didn’t feel right. The extremely narrow passage prevented any intestinal gas from being released. Experience was unpleasant and frightful.
Freud was right by emphasizing tension and pleasure are natural necessities for living. I was experiencing tension by not being able to discharge or release a load of crap. Though other babies were experiencing the total pleasures of pooping. I was unable to grasp that feeling. I was trapped, early on, experiencing frustration and discomfort. By withholding it for three days, I was unable to enjoy its psychological benefits of discharging my body’s waste. I was permanently spooked at the anal stage and trying to pursue the pleasure of defecating.
After the operation, I couldn’t hold onto the poop, it poured out like a landslide on a very wet day. I boldly tried to keep my droppings, but I couldn’t hold it down. The doctor informed my parents that my birth defect was nothing more than being born without a rectal opening. Once the villagers took wind of what happened they immediately spread rumors that the family had neglected their son. Paul was viewed by the villagers as a victim born without an asshole. As vulgar as it sounds, the word implies someone as being stupid and selfish. The term asshole was used intentionally to insult the entire family. Blame was tossed at Steward, my dad for not having the correct amount of chromosomes to yield a functional asshole. Jesse and Valerie were spared from the insults as they were attending school away from the neighborhood. Paul happened to be the sitting duck in the family. As the gossip spread, Steward became more bitter and resentful at the inappropriate remarks made by the insensitive neighbors.
Gertrude, my mother, worked at the post office collecting all the hearsay commentaries and then spread some. A menu of wisecracks originated from the post office mocking Steward and his family. Months had passed and the jokes didn’t subside; the buffoonery took a toll on Steward. The witty remarks outraged my dad to the point that he no longer wanted to live in the region. The constant insults made Steward frustrated and bitter. His heart and conscience couldn’t bear to work in the community any longer. Steward was a skilful cabinet maker at PMR industries, the owner passed away and the company ceased to exist. Afterwards he explored the opportunity to run a modest renovation business in town. In spite of his effort circumstances pushed him to become discouraged and disappointed. His gloomy outlook into the future brought tears to his eyes. Gertrude didn’t support her husband, and wasn’t willing to give up her roots. After twelve years of marriage, Steward expected Gertrude to follow his ambition. She didn’t approve or disapprove of his decision of ditching the family.
Gertrude was a real trooper; she didn’t share the same outlook as her husband. She wasn’t going to allow Steward to dictate what the future held for her. The countryside and the diversity of the region are appealing to stay. Many businesses embraced words like ranch, steak as well as pizza into the menu. The Eastern Township came together to welcome the tourists by winning their trust to shop and support the community. Their distinctive differences were pushed aside as the almighty dollar spoke many languages. Gertrude was convinced that the political party made efforts to split the polls to control the public. Previously, the church was responsible for keeping the citizens under their wings. The government didn’t interfere with the make up, since it was advantageous to keep the population distracted. Gertrude acknowledged that Steward was leaving, since he was sick and tired of the township.
My mother was viewed as a dynamic, passionate person who cared for her children. After my dad left she took employment at the local bakery, baking cakes and pastries. Her pastries were heavenly and the locals needed to order ahead of time to get their favorite treats. Otherwise, they had to settle for whatever was left-over at the counter. Gertrude won over the community by baking gluten free apple pies with a sprinkle of cinnamon.
