    Zuza’s first memory goes back to when she was a toddler, sitting on the top mattress of a bunk bed in a small room at her grandma’s house.

    Lime-green striped wallpaper, mid-afternoon light coming through the square louvre window placed opposite to a closed door. Sitting next to the bed, staring back at her, the only other living thing that she could see: a big tall German shepherd, round belly, mouth half-open, panting. Its heavy, long pink tongue pulsing. Breathing interrupting stillness.

    As a five-year-old, Zuza understood that there was more to that picture than a bedroom with a dog. One afternoon, at Grandma’s house, following sounds that reminded her of the dog, she peeked through the lock of a closed door and accidentally saw one of her uncles, and a woman she later had to call Aunty, naked in the middle of a bed.
