Dance of the Hour - Harold Wayne
PROLOGUE
As Harry listened to the words of the beautiful song, Love Never Dies
, they stirred his imagination, and he thoughtfully considered, why? . . . Why me? Why did I fall in love with Diedre? What happened to bring it on? The two of us, thousands of miles apart, and having never met, nor seen or heard of each other! Then, one day of days, there is brief contact between us by way of the internet, which seemed to have brought us together. Was it just happenstance, or what??
As he pondered the lyrics, they begged the questions.
"Who knows when love begins
Who knows what makes it start
One day it’s simply there, alive inside your heart
It slips into your thoughts, and infiltrates your soul
It takes you by surprise, then siezes full control
Try to deny it, or try to protest
Love won’t let you go
Once you’ve been possessed"
Could Harry or Diedre have foreseen love coming their way? Not by any stretch of the imagination! Not only had they never met, nor heard of one another, but, niether sought nor contemplated a relationship! What strange phenomena comes into the lives of total strangers, and brings them together from different countries, thousands of miles apart, to experience such a profound love as to defy the imagination? Maybe, a love conceived in heaven… . unbeknownst to them and known only to God?
Life in more gentle times was kind to Diedre and Harry, considering each had been hurt earlier on, to some degree. They each were living quite and relatively happy lives in their own environs, never giving thought to what was unfolding in the days ahead and would take them spiraling to lives undreamed of, never giving a solitary thought to what was oncoming!!
CHAPTER I
Brazil
Diedre was born a healthy little girl in the city of Joinville, Brazil. It was a beautiful city of cultural diversity, with a large Germanic population, as well as large numbers of Italian and some Portuguese descent. She grew up with a brother and two sisters there. Her brother, being the elder of the siblings, married young and moved away, leaving Diedre and her two sisters to grow up with their father and mother.
She was a bright little girl who loved life and her country. She made many friends growing up in her hometown, while enjoying her school days with them. As she reached the age of sixteen, her parents, for economic reasons, decided to move to the city of Sao Paulo. The move to Sao Paulo became somewhat unnerving for Diedre, for it was so much larger than Joinville, with a dramatic change in lifestyle for her.
Sao Paulo was vastly different, for it is the largest city in South America, with the world’s twelfth largest population, and a diverse habitation. It was a sad departure for her, leaving behind all the friends she knew and loved, having only her memories of them to take with her.
Arriving in Sao Paulo, Diedre and family moved into a large apartment building, locating to the fifteenth floor. Below, was the beautiful Ibirapuera Park
and a vast horizon with a panoramic view of the City of Sao Paulo, as far as the eye could see!
At first, Diedre took on the persona of a shy young girl and became sick, but with the loving care of her father, soon recovered and made the adjustments to living their new lifestyle.
Diedre spent many unencumbered hours gazing down on the majestic view of the park and the city’s horizon, while listening to music on her radio. She was particularly fond of the music of the United States, and especially that sung in English. Diedre had a penchant for the English language and a strong desire to learn to speak it.
CHAPTER II
Having graduated high school, Diedre pursued working a job to help with family expenses and with some state support, they managed to eke out a living. She had long dreamed of getting a college education to become a journalist and afford a better life, but for now was having to be content with what was made available to her family.
Her parents were then on the verge of breaking up their marriage. Her father, being an alcoholic, had been chastised on many occasions by her mother, for his drinking, and warned he would have to leave if he did not cease the drinking. Her pleas fell on deaf ears and she demanded he leave without reservation, for he virtually contributed so little, if any to their support.
Diedre’s father was at the forefront of the family’s problems and tried to hide his affliction. Later on, he began to outright display his rancor with the entire family. Life fast became a family nightmare, exacerbated by his drinking. Diedre’s mother had prayed for his salvation, but without success.
Diedre was virtually heartbroken by her father’s eviction, and with her brother having moved away, it seemed that their family was diminishing before her eyes.
There was Sergie, a young man in a middle class
