Chapter One
Humble beginnings of star-crossed lovers
Two star-crossed lovers who were soulmates and destined to be each other’s true love on this earthly plane started life with humble beginnings. The 16th of April 1986 and 24th of July 1986, respectively, heralded the arrival of a baby boy and a baby girl whose fates were divinely orchestrated.
The birth of Veer was a joyous occasion to his family as he was the first son and grandchild in the family; he was a baby boy who touched the lives of everyone he met with his contagious smile. His parents worked in commerce, and he had three younger siblings, two brothers and a sister. His little sister arrived when he was fourteen years old, and he instinctively became the protective big brother. Veer was raised by his paternal grandparents as his parents had to work. He spent most of his childhood with the paternal side of the family, and, as he grew into adolescence, he became more acquainted with his maternal side of the family. When Veer was ten years old, his parents moved to Gauteng with his siblings but left him behind due to his school commitments. A few months later, Veer joined his family but soon became ill, which meant that they all had to return to Durban.
Three months later, a similar joy was shared in Aditi’s home as she became the first paternal grandchild; she was a little princess who was dearly loved by all. Her arrival forced her father to start his own business to support his new family. Her mother worked in administration. Aditi had two younger brothers whom she loved dearly. Since her parents were working, she was also raised by her paternal grandparents. Her paternal grandfather had been paralysed from the waist down after a fall and was cared for by her grandmother. On the brink of adolescence, she was introduced to the maternal side of her family and soon developed strong relationships with them.
Before the birth of Veer and Aditi, the universe had begun setting the stage for their arrival through synchronicities that would only be uncovered way into their future. The star-crossed lovers were born to parents who shared the same birth months: Veer’s mother was born on the 15th of January and his father on the 01st of August, whilst Aditi’s mother was born on the 13th of January and her father on the 20th of August. Thus, Veer and Aditi had similar experiences with their parents regarding their personalities, as they were growing up. Also, their youngest siblings shared the same birth month January but were born five years apart.
Veer and Aditi’s mothers were the dominant personalities in their parental relationships, and the two women did not have cordial relationships with their in-laws, which put a strain on their respective families. In their adult years, the two mothers were diagnosed with different autoimmune conditions, which left them reliant on their husbands, mothers and eldest children for support when their respective conditions flared up. Expanding Veer and Aditi’s web revealed that Veer’s paternal grandfather was the principal of a primary school about ninety metres from where Aditi’s paternal grandparents lived and the place where Aditi would be born. Both Veer and Aditi attended a primary school less than a hundred metres from their paternal grandparents’ homes. Through further extrapolation of the web, it was discovered that Aditi’s paternal grandfather’s brothers were close friends with Veer’s paternal grandfather’s first cousins.
Teachings about religion, culture, tradition and values were instilled in Veer and Aditi by their paternal grandparents, which shaped their mindsets and set them apart from their siblings and cousins. Their siblings were raised by their maternal grandparents, who had a simpler approach to life and were easy-going. Therefore, Veer and Aditi’s siblings did not share their approach to life as their teachings differed.
Aditi’s dream of having a traditional Hindu wedding was born from watching many hours of Bollywood movies with her paternal grandfather. Sadly, he passed away when she was ten years old, leaving a huge void in her life. Six months later came the arrival of Aditi’s second brother. She immediately bonded with and spent all her free time focused on him; she was like a motherly figure. A few years went by. Aditi was fast approaching adolescence, so her mother decided to enrol her into modelling classes as she felt that her daughter was too introverted. It worked for a few years, but a model’s lifestyle did not suit Aditi’s personality, so she left.
Aditi excelled academically and in sports during her primary school years. She played volleyball and netball. Her academic track record and sporting accolades put her in good standing to secure a place in a private all-girls’ high school, something that no one else in her grade had done. The new school was a complete culture shock to Aditi, and she struggled at first in her new school environment but eventually settled in.
Veer came from a family of educators. Furthermore, his paternal grandfather had played tennis at a national level – and faced resistance due to apartheid – and this had a positive impact on Veer. He did not want to disappoint his family, who set high standards in academics and sport. Veer was able to excel academically and decided to focus on soccer, field events and track events. Tennis was not widely available for Veer due to politics as the country was only just emerging from the apartheid regime. He completed his primary school years and was enrolled in a high school that was highly rated.
Veer and Aditi’s humble beginnings set the stage for the lives they were destined to live out. Their upbringing differed from that of their siblings and moulded them into the humble, caring and compassionate people they turned out to be with values and integrity that set them apart from the world. At the time of their birth, the financial constraints faced by their parents resulted in Veer and Aditi having limited access to luxurious resources. This access was further reduced, for a period, when their siblings arrived. From these limitations emerged a sense of responsibility to be mindful of resources. This responsibility was further strengthened by the teachings and values instilled in them by their paternal grandparents. These experiences were not readily available to them when they were born. Their parents’ financial standing was much improved by the time their siblings arrived. These attributes allowed their souls to become one.
Chapter Two
Letting love find a way along the path of star-crossed lovers
The meeting of the star-crossed lovers was a cosmic interaction, and, when it happened, neither knew would change their lives forever.
One summer night in 2000, a party was being hosted at the local community hall by Aditi’s high school to raise funds for the school. Other schools in the area had also been invited. Veer was in attendance with his friends (boys from the hood), while Aditi attended with her close friends. While being pursued by a friend of a friend who Aditi did not seem interested in and tried to avoid, she noticed a group of boys dancing. One boy seemed to stand out mainly because of his dance style. His face was not very visible because of the poor lighting, but Aditi was still for a few moments without realising it as she looked at him. There was no contact made between Veer and Aditi that night, but a connection had been made whether these souls realised it or not. This happened despite each being unaware of who the other was or whether they would meet again.
During the summer of January 2001, several grade 10 students from the local community – all-girls’ and all-boys’ high schools – decided to transfer to a local co-educational school. This was an opportunity for Aditi to finally leave the all-girls’ school where she was unhappy because she was being bullied by some older girls. After several attempts to motivate her parents to agree to change high schools, Aditi finally convinced them to agree to the transfer.
At the time of changing schools, Aditi was unaware that Veer was a student at her new school. Leaving her friends behind at the old school, she began her new adventure and tried to make friends in her new environment. This proved challenging because of her introverted nature and that she had moved to the new school a week later than the other students, but she soon settled in.
While students were transitioning from outside schools to the co-educational school, they could form a complete class of transfer students, but changes were also occurring within the school. Veer and two of his friends decided to apply for an internal transfer
