Sally Ann and Her Cowboy - Franklin Eddy

    Chapter 1

The young red-headed cowboy glanced over at Sally Ann, and catching her eye, he turned shyly away. She had noticed that Clint had been showing up a lot lately, presumably to see her dad. She wondered if she was the reason for his visits.

The cowboy stayed for supper, and after he had left, Sally Ann's mom brought up a startling proposal. Clint has been coming around, so he could look you over.  After supper he asked your dad if he could marry you.

He wants to marry me? Sally Ann asked in a shocked voice. He hasn't said five words to me since he has been coming around.

Dad and I talked about it in some detail, her mother continued. Clint has a nice spread with lots of cattle. He is only about seven years older than you, and he is hard working and would make a fine husband. He has been out on his own since he was barely grown and has been working as a cowboy on ranches around here. His uncle died and left that ranch to him about a year ago, so he can support you and your children well.

Sally Ann didn't know what to say, but she could understand why her folks were interested in her getting married. Besides herself, there were five other children who were even younger than her. Feeding a large family was not easy since her folks only had a small farm. She thought about it, and decided it might be all right. A lot of girls younger than her were already married, and she couldn't stay single forever. Clint was handsome in a tall gangling way, although sort of shy.

The wedding was held a few weeks later at her folks' house with a lot of friends and neighbors attending. The wedding was in the morning, and then everyone enjoyed a large noonday meal. Clint had brought a wagon with him. Friends and neighbors had given them wedding presents, so when the newly married couple left in the middle of the afternoon, the back of the wagon was piled full.

His ranch was a long distance on bad roads, so they had quite a trip ahead of them. Her mom had made a meal for them to eat on the road. Sally Ann's mom had cautioned her not to talk too much, so she would impress Clint. A good wife is a silent wife, she had told her. Sally Ann was pretty good for a while, but then she couldn't stand it any longer. She loved to talk and started in.

Clint glanced over at her like a man that had bought a mare and hadn't realized that she was blind in one eye. He listened for a couple of hours while Sally Ann talked about everything under the sun as he drove across the open prairie. Finally he couldn't take it anymore and said, Sally Ann, your dad told me that you rarely talked.

    She
