About this ebook

Albert Mouse was sitting on the sofa reading a book about woodwork that Mrs Saunders had loaned him from the bookshop.

"Mum, do you think I could have a workshop?" he asked, looking up from the book.

Mrs Mouse put her knitting down and looked at her son over the rim of her glasses.

"A workshop? What kind of workshop?" she asked, sounding slightly concerned.

"You know, with a workbench and tools so I can make things out of wood?" sighed the little mouse.

"Tools! No, Albert, that sounds like it could be dangerous if you ask me," said his mother.

But when Albert Mouse hears that Father Christmas has the biggest workshop in the world where all the toys are made for children at Christmas, the little mouse soon gets very excited. That night he has a dream that he goes to Lapland to help Father Christmas .....

But is it a dream?

Author

James Hywel

James began dabbling in writing in 2001 with many of his first books going to 5th and 6th editions. In August 2021 he wrote The Musings of the Milliner for and featuring his niece and nephew in Scotland. Little did he know that this book would be the start of The Magical Misadventures of Mr Milliner series (now containing seven books). His next series was the much-loved Adventures of Albert Mouse, featuring Dartmouth’s most fa-mouse resident, Albert Mouse. James has now written over 30 children's books. To try and explain where his stories come from would be impossible and not even James can explain it. His writing process is as unorthodox and quirky as his books are magical and mind-transporting. James pens a weekly email entitled Letters from the Oak Tree where he talks about writing, books, and basically anything and everything else.

Albert's Christmas Adventure - James Hywel

    Chapter 1

Albert Mouse was sitting on the sofa reading a book about woodwork that Mrs Saunders had loaned him from the bookshop.

Mum, do you think I could have a workshop? he asked, looking up from the book.

Mrs Mouse put her knitting down and looked at her son over the rim of her glasses.

A workshop? What kind of workshop? she asked, sounding slightly concerned.

You know, with a workbench and tools so I can make things out of wood? sighed the little mouse.

Tools! No, Albert, that sounds like it could be dangerous if you ask me, said his mother.

But I could make all sorts of things, like furniture and toys, said Albert.

And a new brain, giggled Dorothy.

Albert threw his sister one of his angry looks.

It’s a lovely idea, Albert, but we don’t really have the room for a workshop and I’m not really sure we need any more furniture, do we? said Mrs Mouse.

Albert returned to reading his book.

Mrs Mouse went back to her knitting but glanced suspiciously over her glasses at her son.

    Chapter 2

After lunch, Albert and his sisters helped their mother with the washing up.

I’m going to sit in the garden and read my book, announced Albert once they’d finished.

Make sure you put a jumper on or at least a scarf. It is December and I don’t want you catching a cold, said his mother.

The little mouse ran upstairs and opened his clothes cupboard.

Hmmm, now which one shall I wear, he said, looking at the various coloured jumpers that were neatly folded in the drawer. The red one, I think, after all, it is nearly Christmas.

The little mouse pulled the jumper over his head and then went downstairs and into the garden. He sat down on the bench and continued reading his woodwork book.

That’s a very Christmassy jumper! said a voice over the garden wall.

Oh, hello, Mrs Saunders, said Albert. Yes, I thought I’d better stay warm.

Very wise, Albert. It is getting surprisingly colder around here. We may even get snow! said Mrs Saunders. Anyway, I see you’re reading the book I loaned to you, are you enjoying it?

I am. I’d love to have a workshop but I don’t think my mother will allow it. She says we don’t have the room, sighed the little mouse.

Oh dear, I sense a very sad mouse, said Mrs Saunders. I’m afraid to say that your mother may be right, workshops can take up a lot of space. I mean, just look at Father Christmas.

    Father Christmas? asked Albert.

Yes, he has a huge workshop in Lapland where he makes all the Christmas toys for the children.

    Wow! said Albert. Really?

    He certainly does.

    Mrs Saunders then paused.

Well, when I say he, what I mean is that his helpers make the toys. After all, he couldn’t make all the toys for all the children in the entire world all by himself. That would be impossible, Mrs Saunders added.

    Is Lapland far? asked Albert.

I’ll say. It’s near the North Pole and very cold, she said. "Anyway, I’d better be getting back to
