Author

James Hywel

James began dabbling in writing in 2001 with many of his first books going to 5th and 6th editions. In August 2021 he wrote The Musings of the Milliner for and featuring his niece and nephew in Scotland. Little did he know that this book would be the start of The Magical Misadventures of Mr Milliner series (now containing seven books). His next series was the much-loved Adventures of Albert Mouse, featuring Dartmouth’s most fa-mouse resident, Albert Mouse. James has now written over 30 children's books. To try and explain where his stories come from would be impossible and not even James can explain it. His writing process is as unorthodox and quirky as his books are magical and mind-transporting. James pens a weekly email entitled Letters from the Oak Tree where he talks about writing, books, and basically anything and everything else.

Albert has a Flying Lesson - James Hywel

    Chapter 1

Now you might think that the sun always shines in Devon and for the most part it does. But every now and again it rains and today was one of those days. Actually, it was the rain hammering on Albert’s window that had woken him up this morning.

I hate it when it rains, said the little mouse to himself as he pulled his duvet over his head to muffle the sound of the rain against the glass.

Just then there was a knock at his bedroom door.

Albert pulled the duvet down and popped his head out.

    Who is it? he asked.

Me, said Thomas, opening the door.

Oh, morning, Thomas, said Albert, sitting himself up in bed.

Your Mum says breakfast is nearly ready.

OK, thanks. I’ll be down in a minute, said the little mouse, pulling back the duvet and getting out of bed.

Thomas closed the door and went downstairs, leaving Albert to get dressed. The little mouse then hurried to the bathroom, washed his face and quickly brushed his teeth.

As he looked at himself in the mirror, Albert noticed that he only had three whiskers on the lefthand side of his face instead of four.

He quickly counted the whiskers on the right side and there were four, just like there should be.

Hmm, that’s odd, he said. A worried look came over his face but before he could ponder it further, he heard a voice.

Albert Mouse, your breakfast is getting cold! shouted his mother from downstairs.

I’m coming! answered Albert as he dashed downstairs.

    Chapter 2

When Albert came into the kitchen, everyone was already tucking into their breakfast.

Oh, there you are! said Mrs Mouse, getting up from the table and opening the oven. I’ve kept your breakfast warm for you.

Mrs Mouse placed the warm plate on the table where Albert was sitting.

Oh, wow! Scrambled eggs on toast said Albert, picking up his knife and fork.

Did you sleep well? his mother asked.

Not really, answered Albert, wrinkling his nose and frowning. The rain woke me up.

Oh dear, Albert’s going to be a grump for the rest of the day, said Dorothy.

No, I’m not! snapped her brother.

You seem grumpy to me, added Millie.

Look, I’m not grumpy. It’s just that I hate it when it rains because that means I have to stay indoors!

Thomas quietly ate his breakfast. He used to mind the rain when he was homeless, but now he had a roof over his head Thomas didn’t care if it was raining or sunny.

Mrs Mouse suddenly put down her knife and fork and looked at her son.

Albert, have you lost one of your whiskers? she asked.

No! said Albert, quickly covering the left side of his face with his hand.

Albert’s going bald! Albert’s going bald! chanted Dorothy.

I’m not going bald! shouted Albert, getting down from the table and running out of the kitchen.

Now look what you’ve done! said Mrs Mouse looking at her daughter. I do wish you would be nice to your little brother.

Thomas quietly got down from the table and went to find Albert.

    Chapter 3

Thomas found Albert in the lounge, sitting on the back of the sofa looking out of the window.

    Are you crying? Asked Thomas.

No, said Albert, wiping his nose and sniffing.

Well, I wouldn’t blame you if you were. Your sister can say some horrible things sometimes, said Thomas.

Yes, she can, replied Albert drying his eyes with the sleeve of his shirt.

But you do know why she’s so horrible to you? asked Thomas.

    Albert shook his head.

She’s jealous of you, smiled Thomas.

Of me? Really? said Albert, looking very surprised.

Oh, yes, said Thomas, settling himself down on the sofa next to Albert. She wishes she could be as clever, brave, adventurous, popular and kind as you.

If people are horrible to me because I’m kind then I don’t want to be kind anymore! said Albert angrily.

"Albert, people shouldn’t change to make people like them. And, anyway, if you weren’t kind then I wouldn’t be sitting here on the couch with you. I’d be still
