Author

James Hywel

James began dabbling in writing in 2001 with many of his first books going to 5th and 6th editions. In August 2021 he wrote The Musings of the Milliner for and featuring his niece and nephew in Scotland. Little did he know that this book would be the start of The Magical Misadventures of Mr Milliner series (now containing seven books). His next series was the much-loved Adventures of Albert Mouse, featuring Dartmouth’s most fa-mouse resident, Albert Mouse. James has now written over 30 children's books. To try and explain where his stories come from would be impossible and not even James can explain it. His writing process is as unorthodox and quirky as his books are magical and mind-transporting. James pens a weekly email entitled Letters from the Oak Tree where he talks about writing, books, and basically anything and everything else.

Albert and the Smuggler Mickey Mustard - James Hywel

    Chapter 1

Albert was sitting up in his window when his attention was caught by the sound of a police siren getting louder and louder.

The little mouse stood up on the window sill to get a better view of the street, just in time to see a police car race past his front gate and disappear up the street.

Gosh! We don’t often see many of those, he said to himself.

Albert was right. The sight of a police car with its blue lights flashing was a very rare sight indeed. It could only mean one thing, so the little mouse opened the window.

Big Tony! Are you there? he shouted.

A large gull glided down from a nearby chimney pot and landed on the window ledge.

There you are! Do you know what’s happening? I just saw a police car, asked Albert.

Whatever it is, Albert, it’s probably trouble. If you ask me, I suspect that where there’s trouble, there’s Mickey Mustard, said Big Tony, sounding very confident and knowledgeable.

Mickey Mustard? Who is he? asked Albert.

Oh, come on Albert, everyone knows Mickey Mustard! said the gull.

Albert had never heard of Mickey, but he decided he had better look like he did, especially in front of Big Tony.

Oh, I thought you said Ricky Custard, said the little mouse. Mickey? Of course, I know him. Big tough Mickey ‘have the shirt off your back as soon as look at you’ Mustard.

The gull sighed and looked at Albert.

You’ve got no idea who he is, have you? said Big Tony.

No, not really, said Albert, feeling very embarrassed.

Didn’t think so, said the gull. "Well, listen up. Mickey if it floats onto the beach I’m ‘aving it’ Mustard is the most famous smuggler in Dartmouth, possibly even in the whole of Devon. If you need anything, then Mickey’s your man."

Wow! A real smuggler? asked Albert.

As real as you or me, said Big Tony.

And you think the police are after him then, do you?

I’d bet half a pasty on it. I just don’t know why they are heading that way, said the gull, looking up the road towards the castle.

    Why’s that? asked Albert.

Because Mickey lives that way, said Big Tony pointing toward Smith Street.

What’s in Smith Street? asked the little mouse, feeling rather concerned that a known criminal lived a few houses away.

No, in Dittisham, just up the river.

Oh, I’ve not been to that part of the world, said Albert, remembering he had only ever been as far as the quayside in his entire life.

Not much there, said the gull. Mickey has a small place on the shore called Smuggler’s Cottage.

    The little mouse looked confused.

So, why don’t the police go there if they are looking for him? he asked the gull.

No idea! Still, it’s none of my business really, said Big Tony. Anyway, nice to see you, Albert. I’m now off to get some lunch. I’ve just seen a child over there with an unattended ice-cream.

And with that, the gull flew off.
