Relief washed over David's face, and he met her halfway, their lips converging for a desperate kiss. A path of cookie crumbs led from the kitchen table to the living room couch. Jessica followed the trail with a broom and dustpan until she reached the end of the line. Laughter burst out from the 8-year-old culprit as blocky animations danced on the television screen.

Jessica sighed. Tommy, I thought I told you, no cookies on the couch. Do you want ants to come and steal you away?

Jessica, that's silly. You'd need over 30,000 ants to do that.

The kid was smart, too smart sometimes. He got that from his father.

As if summoned, the keys rattled in the lock. David was home. Jessica quickly swept up the remaining mess and dumped it into the garbage. She peeked at her reflection in the hall mirror and tucked a stray blonde curl behind her ear before greeting him at the front door.

How was your day? she asked.

Tiring, David replied. He set his briefcase down and stripped out of his coat. How are you feeling?

Much better, thank you. Those antibiotics got me back on track.

You certainly sound better.

David's smile sent butterflies to the pit of Jessica's stomach. She had been working for him for six months, and it still happened every time. At twenty-two, she knew she was too old for girlish crushes, but there was something about him that made her body tingle. He was intelligent, kind, and made her laugh.
