CHAPTER ONE

Public Health is defined as the art and science of preventing disease, prolonging life and promoting health through the organized efforts of society. Activities to strengthen public health capacities and services aim to provide conditions under which people can maintain and improve their health and wellbeing or prevent the deterioration of their health. Public health focuses on the wellbeing of the people without being limited to the prevention of disease only. Public health services also include the provision of personal services to individual persons, like vaccinations, behavioral counseling, or health advice (Acheson, 1988; WHO).

Public Health Professionals majorly focus on preventing disease and promoting healthy lifestyles among people. We do this by implementing educational programs, develop policies, administer services, conduct research and regulate systems to achieve these goals.

Roles of Public Health Professionals

Public health professionals’ major function is to put measures in place to prevent disease or problems that will affect the health of the people. We do this through implementing educational programs, recommending policies, administering services, and conducting research.

Public Health professionals spend several years in school to acquire knowledge on how to become professionals. There are several hands-on skills we were taught while in school where we attended our lectures. We will be discussing different skills we were taught, and how to monetize these skills respectively.
