Grow Your Clinic - Ben Lynch
DEGREE 1:
PERSONAL MASTERY
Your best self
Core element: Mindset
Perhaps you know the old adage, ‘Your business can’t outgrow your own personal growth’. Mindset is about shifting from lack to abundance. And, as author and coach Anthony Robbins highlights, what stunts growth is rarely a lack of resources but a lack of resourcefulness. In other words, you need to go beyond scarcity and think more creatively, and be generous and abundantly minded so that you show up as a better version of yourself every day.
Key focus: State
Principle: Progress over perfection
All of the things I’ve done in my life that I’m proud of have been done on the threshold of immense fear.
Megan Washington (musician and songwriter)
It doesn’t get easier; we get better
Running your clinic doesn’t get easier, especially as you grow. You have more to manage, more that seeks your attention, and more things that are out of your direct control.
Anthony Robbins said, ‘Every problem is a gift – without problems we would not grow’. Being conscious of your past experiences in growing your clinic is valuable because they can create a perspective through which you see certain aspects and principles that guide your actions. These experiences can also create a bias towards certain approaches that can be both empowering or disempowering. Ensure you learn the lessons from these experiences, but also ensure any lessons are not too limiting. For example, perhaps your past experiences have led you to believe business partnerships don’t work. Another way of looking at this is that to make a partnership work well, you now know you need quality agreements from the start and a rhythm of connection and communication.
Relatable experience
Lisa, owner of a multidisciplinary musculoskeletal clinic, reflected on a subtle, yet significant shift in her state. ‘Like all of us, my to-do list hasn’t shrunk at all (it has actually grown) but I feel much less overwhelmed and more in control of my time. I feel excited and grateful by the things I get to do and the future of our clinic’s journey. I have realised that I need to love this journey no matter what stage I am in, so I am re-framing my mindset to help serve me better.’
Conditions are always perfect
Trevor Hendy has won several world Ironman championships, joined the Sport Australia Hall of Fame, and received an Order of Australia for his services to the community and the sport of surf lifesaving.
As much as Trevor has become known for his success, he’s become just as well known for his approach – captured by the saying that was commonly associated with him: ‘conditions are always perfect’. In other words, if you focus too much on the external and not your internal state or statements, you run the risk of distraction and burnout.
Similar to being an elite athlete, growing your clinic presents many obstacles that can lead to moments of adversity. Some of these factors are out of your control or influence, which has the potential to weigh you down and discourage you from starting or continuing. Instead, you need to focus on your internal conditions and what you can control. Regardless of your circumstances, conditions are always perfect to grow your clinic – you simply need to tap into a more resourceful state to capture the momentum you need to make progress.
IFTTT
No, it’s not a typing error. The acronym IFTTT stands for If This, Then That. It’s a form of conditional logic (or sequence of steps) that designers of software and systems use.
IFTTT is a very simple way to describe how you might create automations in software and systems. The automation works like this: If This [event occurs], Then That [action will be triggered].
However, when it comes to your own logic (or sequence of thoughts) as a clinic owner, IFTTT can become a cognitive error – and an error that can make being a clinic owner exhausting. The exhaustion comes from the IFTTT sequence being a repeating pattern:
If This happens, Then That will ...
If This month we can make more money, Then That will make me less stressed.
If This busy next six-week period can go to plan, Then That will allow me to think more clearly about the important things.
If This prospective team member joins us, Then That will give me more
