The drama presented is an unprecedented work in the field of Hindi literature. This play was written and published in Hindi for the first time.

In this book, we are presenting the English translation of this play for you. This serious drama will force you to think a lot. Although the playwright is more famous for his stories, this play, also written by him, takes him to new heights.

"Nothing. Scapegoat! I am thinking how dreadful life is; it is the same everywhere, Shankar. It doesn't let you rest anywhere. I came here after running away from there to get some peace. These are the people; look at them. How happily they are taking the innocent animal to the altar for sacrifice! This is what happens everywhere. Singing life takes its victim, and his blood is sprinkled on the waves. I am one of the victims. But I had thought that I would not die; I would refresh my mind by coming here." (He grits his teeth.) "But no, the bloody claw of life is the thirst for blood everywhere." (They hear the song again.) "Look. Life calls again and again. This bloody call also does not end the chase. I don't want to die, Shankar."

There is a very big window in front of which a big plain curtain is hung. There is only one picture across the room, on the table, of a smiling 20-year-old girl.

Beside the picture lay thick volumes of Tess, Kamayani, and Tennyson, beside a tall tin of talcum powder.

There is a door on the left side of the stage. Shankar is sitting on the mat in the middle of the room, preparing to shave by placing a mirror on the post and swirling in the soap dish by applying water to the brush. Someone outside knocks on the door.)

Shankar: Oh! There is no peace, even for a moment. Now don't know who has come to die! (The door knocks again.) Someone reading the nameplate from outside says, Shankar Dutt! This is probably the house. Hey Shankar!"
