    Foreword

    Archbishop Ng Moon Hing

    Anglican Archbishop of Southeast Asia

The epistle to the Galatians is commonly considered to be one of the earliest foundational instructions of the Christian faith. It is believed that the apostle Paul wrote this epistle in the early days of his missionary ministry. He was adamant to teach the proper foundation of faith, especially amid heretical teachings by the Judaizers. In Galatia, after a few years of establishing the faith, he noticed that many people who claimed to believe were starting to abandon the core belief of justification, which is by the grace of God through faith in Christ.

Paul had to remind the Galatian Christians about his teachings. He was conscious of the Judaizers and their fleshly and worldly syncretistic teachings, which were indoctrinating and causing confusion to the believers. He laid a strong contrast between the keeping of the law and faith in Christ as two opposing positions. The lessons he drew from his wealth of Jewish learning—which covered Abraham, Moses, the Mosaic Law, the bondservant Hagar, the free woman Sarah, the legalistic son Ishmael and the promised son Isaac—became his arguments and presentations. These, I believe, were intended to disarm his opponents the Judaizers, and to give confidence to the believers.

The apostle Paul stressed the importance of grace alone, faith alone, and Christ alone in the Christian faith. This highlights the fundamental beliefs of the sixteenth-century Reformers, who reaffirmed these principles when they saw that the faith had been compromised. Paul emphasized that salvation requires a clear understanding that justification is by grace and through faith in Jesus Christ alone.

Paul’s words in the book of Galatians can be summarized with these words:

Without Christ, there is no salvation.

Without Faith there is no justification.

Without Grace there is no redemption.
