Chapter 2
Introduction
In the Skin of a Lion,
a novel by Michael Ondaatje covers the time period between 1913 and 1938. The story is set in the city of Toronto and the surrounding rural areas.
Toronto happens to be going through industrial growth, and in this industrial growth, the contribution of immigrant labor is highly significant. It is asserted that without the labor of immigrants, industrial growth would not have been possible.
The story basically revolves around the otherwise invisible manual laborers who were involved in the construction of the integral structures in the city of Toronto. The structures that they built include the Bloor Street Bridge and the tunnel under Lake Ontario, which now supplies water to the city for filtration.
