Chapter One: Introduction
The City of Ember
by Jeanne DuPrau was first published in 2003. It is a post apocalyptic science fiction novel. The story is about an underground city called Ember. The citizens of the city have never seen nor heard about the world that exists on the surface of the earth. The infrastructure of the city is quite old and the situation is threatening.
Lina Mayfleet and Doon Harrow are the two protagonists. Both of them are young; they are friends. They begin to follow the clues that had been left behind by the original builders of this city and safely reach the outside world.
The City of Ember
is the first book in the eponymous series. The other books are The People of Sparks, The Prophet of Yonwood, and The Diamond of Darkhold.
The book was made into a movie in the year 2008. Likewise, it was adapted into a graphic novel by Niklas Asker in the year 2012.
The most admirable aspect of the novel, according to the critics and reviewers, is its main characters, Lina Mayfleet and Doon Harrow, and its setting. The characters are courageous so they are obviously liked by the readers. However, they have their flaws such as human pride and greed, etc.
Most of the reviewers were unanimous that the readers would be easily connected to the characters because they are very normal human beings and they have their virtues and flaws like any other human being.
Some critics say that the darkness of Ember is essentially literal. The generator often fails and runs out of power.
The history of the city is not revealed to the reader all at once. It comes to the reader with the progression of the main story. The readers get the necessary information about the city from the events which they read about.
Chapter Two: Plot Overview
As the story begins, it transpires that several architects, scientist, and doctors have assembled have assembled a city called ‘Ember.’ These people are known as ‘The Builders.’
It is a subterranean city which stores the supplies for the citizens to survive at least two hundred years. The city has been built to endure a disaster that is supposed to be impending.
The builders give the first mayor of the city a box that is locked. The box contains the instructions for the city’s inhabitants. It is going to be passed down from one mayor of the city to the next mayor.
This box reaches the hands of the seventh mayor. Once, there is an attack of deadly cough that infects the mayor and the other citizens.
The mayor attempts his best but he fails to open the box. Before returning that box to its rightful place, the seventh mayor dies. He is not even able to inform anyone how important the box is.
