    Chapter One: Introduction

Snow Country by Yasunari Kawabata was first published as a short story in a literary journal in January 1935. It was later developed into a full-length novel.

The novel brought the author a lot of name and fame, ensconcing him among the foremost authors in Japan.

The novel is considered to be one of the most regarded classic works of Japanese literature.

Having published it as a short story in the journal, Kawabata continued to write about the characters. Later on, parts of the novel eventually appeared in five different journals.

At last the final part appeared in the year 1937. For the following three years, the author did not work on that story. Then he began to work on the novel, adding new chapters and got it published in two different journals, in 1940 and 1941.

He did not stop there and wrote the last two sections, mixing them into a single piece of writing. It was published in a journal in 1946. He added another piece in the year 1947.

Eventually, in 1948, the complete novel was ready to be published as it is available today. Snow Country is an integration of nine separately published works in different journals.
