    The Mesmer Society #4 - A.R. Lain

    Chapter 15

I woke up in the plush bed with the warm rays of the sun playfully poking at my lids. Someone had parted the curtains and I opened my eyes to the luxurious bedroom bathed in a clouded morning light. I spun around, the realization of where I was —and what it meant— just dawning on me, but the bed was empty.

I was aching from last night, but I felt well rested, peaceful. More so than I ever had since the beginning of the term. Muttered sounds were coming from the kitchen and I couldn’t help but smile at the thought of whom it must be from.

    Luke.

I stretched lazily and hugged the fluffy pillow against my body. Was it really happening? Had I really stepped through the looking glass? Everything seemed the same... but my heart was filled with a satisfying joy.

We had made love together. And it hadn’t been half as scary as I’d expected it to be. I closed my eyes and moaned at the memory. His hands against my skin, his lips on my lips... his tongue...

I blushed and sat up in the bed, the covers bunched around my body in an improvised robe. I hadn’t expected to spend the night out. I had no change of clothes... Worse, I had left my dress in the first floor boudoir where all the pupils had undressed.

I bit my lip and looked frantically around the room with hope. My eyes set on a merciful bathrobe that had been placed on the armchair facing the bed. I scrambled out of the covers and slipped into the soft but slightly oversized charcoal robe. A large white ‘M’ was embroidered on one side.

Thank god for the Mesmers and their attention to details.

A quick glance in the mirror erased some of my concerns. I looked about as rested as I felt, and by some miracle the product I had put in my hair last night had doubled as a sort of catastrophe controller. I wasn’t too scary to look at. In fact, I thought while making a seductive pout at my reflection, I was looking pretty good.

You look very beautiful, said a voice behind me. Did you sleep well?

I spun around, startled, and saw Luke leaning nonchalantly on the wall with his arms crossed. No fluffy bathrobe for him. He was wearing a dark pair of jeans and a white shirt rolled up his arms. Flawless as always.

How long had he been standing there silently? Amazing, I decided to answer as if I hadn't just been winking at myself in the mirror.

I had always hated that precise moment of the morning after, when you see the person for the first time after a torrid night of getting to know each other intimately. It always made me feel awkward.

Yesterday, we were all over each other. Today... I didn’t know where to put myself. Part of me wanted to reach for him, continue where we had left things off at before we went to sleep. Another part of me just couldn’t recover the ease that had developed between us last night.

Good, he said. Are you hungry?

My stomach tried to answer this one for me with a groan. Yeah... think we can find anything to eat here?

    He smiled. I made breakfast.

I followed him in the kitchen. It was small but better equipped than my own, with stone countertops and state of the art appliances. I propped myself on one of the tall stools bordering the curved breakfast bar. Luke had arranged a placemat and a large glass of orange juice was waiting for me.

He went behind the countertop. Do you want some tea?

Oh! No thanks, I’m a coffee girl... do you have any?

No coffee, sorry. He filled two cups with the clear greenish content of a teapot. Try this.

I took the cup and brought it to my nose. It smelled delicious, a mix of herbs with a tinge of sweetness. I would never have picked him as a tea drinker...

But what did I know about him, really?

A veggie omelet sound good for you? He asked, throwing a dish towel onto his shoulder.

I blew on the steaming cup in front of me. Sure, I said. Sounds awesome.

Luke opened the oven and produced a colorful dish in front of me with what looked like a proud smirk.

I cocked one eyebrow, surprised to find that everything had already been prepared. And what if I hadn’t been feeling for eggs? I teased him.

He shrugged. I was hoping you’d like it. His tone seemed to have switched from playful to serious in the space of an instant. I wanted you to have a nice breakfast before we discuss our terms...

Terms? I asked. Was that Mesmers’ talk for ‘relationship’? But of course it was not really a relationship... Not in the normal sense of the word.

He was my mentor. What did that really mean?

Don’t worry about that for now, he said. Eat.

I looked at him dubiously for a few seconds more before the delicious aroma of his cooking became too strong for me to resist. I eagerly forked into the fluffy omelet and took a bite. Heavenly. I wouldn’t have been surprised if he had snatched this from the Mesmers’ kitchen down on the main floor, but the dirty pan and bowls in the sink were testifying in his favor.

I took a sip of my tea. Not bad. But it wasn’t coffee.

    You like it? Luke asked.

It’s nice... but I’m used to something stronger, especially in the morning.

I was talking about the omelet...

Oh my god yes it’s awesome, I said, after another forkful of delicious eggs.

He leaned against the countertop behind him as if he was preparing to watch me eat. I figured we could talk about—

You don’t eat? I asked before he could finish. His intense gaze fixed on my every move was starting to make me feel self-conscious.

I’m good, I ate already, he answered. Like I was saying, we need to discuss the terms—

Won’t you sit with me? I said eagerly. "I always
