    The Mesmer Society #2 - A.R. Lain

    Chapter 5

My head was filled with fog, making my thoughts seem distant and ethereal. I stretched lazily, trying to clutch at the real world, hoping it would get me out of this haze. I was lying on a fluffy bed, almost swallowed by a plush comforter and a sea of pillows. I slowly opened my eyes and blinked at the ceiling of brocade right above me.

I was definitely not at home.

The memory came back to me like a ton of bricks crushing my chest. The darkroom. The two men coming at me. Seizing me, holding me still. The sweet smell of chloroform.

I repressed a sob. I had just been abducted. Me. Right on the campus where I studied and felt safe every day.

Why? Where was this place? Who were those guys? What was I doing here? What the hell’s was going to happen to me? My mind raced and formed a million scenarios, each one darker than the last and my heart started pumping faster, fueled by the hysteria of speculation.

I closed my eyes and took a deep breath. It was of no use to panic now. I brought a hand to my heart as if it would make it stop beating so fast and noticed that I wasn’t tied. I straightened immediately, sitting in the bed. My legs were free to move as well.

Whatever was happening, there was hope.

I took a good look around me. I was in a large canopy bed in the middle of a richly furnished bedroom. I stood up, resting my weight on a bed post. My legs were unsteady and the room seemed to be spinning around me. I closed my eyes and tried to focus on the smooth touch of the mahogany under my palm, giving time for my body to adjust.

Some strength gradually came back to me and I was able to stand without help. I needed to assess where I was.

I crept to the window and pulled apart the curtains. It was night outside, but I could make out the contour of large trees not too far from the windows. I took a look down and immediately recognized the entryway I had crossed earlier that day. It was dimly lit by a trail of fairy lights, but there was no mistaking the beautiful cobblestone works and the perfectly tailored bushes.

    Of course.

I closed the curtains in a sigh. They were of the same gold and plum brocade that was adorning the bed. The same brocade I had noticed in many places in the Mesmers’ mansion.

So that’s why Alex had been so confident I’d be here tonight. She had never intended to leave the choice up to me.

Strangely, I couldn’t bring myself to be angry with her. Not as much as I wanted to, anyway. And this enraged me even more than Alex’s arrogant certitude that she knew what was best for me better than I did.

How could I not be mad at her? She had gone too far. Sending those guys to bring me here... It could have turned so wrong. This wasn’t something a sane person would do.

But why couldn’t I bring myself to hate her? This wasn’t how a sane person would react either.

A dry cleaner bag had been hanged on the wardrobe’s door and I didn’t need to guess what I would find inside. I unzipped the bag, dismayed by my own composure. How could I be so calm? I had just been brought here against my will. Surely I couldn’t be considering putting on that gown and joining everyone at the party as if nothing had happened?

But it was as if I was in a trance, gently uncovering the dress while my mind was going crazy. As if I was possessed by Alex’s will.

The dress was absolutely gorgeous, a white chiffon number with a textured bodice of delicate twisted ruffles and a graceful flowing skirt that was offsetted by a pleated sash worn high above the waist.

I undressed and slipped into the gown without a second thought. It fitted to perfection. I opened the wardrobe’s door to find a mirror and blinked in awe at my reflection. My hair was messy from the struggle, and I was barely wearing a touch of mascara... but the dress was doing all the hard work for me.

I twirled around and it moved with me like liquid. Tucked on one side of the mirror was a small note.

    Don’t forget the accessories. -Alex

As if on cue, I looked down into the wardrobe and found two boxes. One of them contained a pair of high heels speckled with a gradient of rhinestones. I lifted the lid of the second box, curious to see what I would find inside.

A beautifully crafted mask of white feathers was looking back at me. It was shaped like a diving dove, with the sides forming two spread wings. I set the mask aside and looked at the rest of the contents. I was not too surprised to find a white lace thong. Nothing I would
