    Introduction

It was after many years, that I went to my ancestral house. I was greeted by the scene of my grandpa sitting on the lawn, surrounded by eight children, all looking at him intently with bewildered eyes, as he told them a story

Grandpa was an expert at holding the attention of these small children. He had a new story each time they came to him. He would modulate his voice, mimic the sounds of animals, and somehow never lose the children's attention.

This reminded me of my childhood days when storytelling sessions were a real treat.  It was a thrill to sit under the trees and listen to the stories of princes, princesses, demons, fairies, animals...the list was never-ending.

Storytelling is the oldest form of teaching. It plays a very important role in the development of children’s vocabulary. It increases their ability to distinguish between right and wrong. It defines and shapes young minds, and plays a great role in moulding the character of the child.

Storytelling sessions not only develop language but also develops emotions and help strengthen relationships. It sows the seed of the eagerness to read and also develops the practice of listening to others talk. It is one of the most important tools in the development of the child in its early stage of learning.

The habit of listening to stories triggers the child’s imagination and encourages the child to be curious. They learn to value books as they observe how the storyteller handles the book as he tells the story.  Through stories, they learn about their own culture. They learn to respect other cultures too. But most of all it creates a very strong bond between the storyteller and the listener. They help children in choosing their role models in life.

This is my humble attempt to promote the habit of storytelling. I am compiling a set of short stories with morals, to keep the tradition of learning through stories alive. I hope it will kindle the love of reading amongst the children, for as Albert Einstein once said,

If you want your children to be smart, tell them stories. If you want them to be brilliant, tell them more stories.
