    Genie Gets A New Job

    1972

Genie spiked her typical afternoon of sappy soaps and talk shows with a bottle of wine today, just because she could. The effects made her drowsy after a while. She didn’t even stir until the breeze from the front door gave her a chill. Then a weight settled itself next to her on the sofa.

Honey, Ned whispered in her ear as he began to massage her leg. It’s almost time for dinner.

Genie rolled to her side and pressed her face into the cushions. Her lunch date with Linda wasn’t until tomorrow.

Well, that ship hadn’t come in, and Aunt Mary’s money was almost spent.

And, Ned said, the only thing that you have to do is take care of this house.

Genie grunted and got to her feet. I’ll make you the spaghetti. She scooped up the bottle and wine glass before making her way toward the kitchen.

Over her shoulder, she heard Ned blurt, You’re starting a job at the dealership with me tomorrow. His voice sounded robotic and rehearsed.

She pivoted on her bare feet. Excuse me?

"We need a new receptionist, and Dad
