Glenda Watson was a compact woman with hair dyed blonde and a personality so cheerful and optimistic that people sometimes wondered if she was for real.
It wasn’t fair that a divorced woman of 52, on a fixed income, with two spoiled sons who hardly ever visited, should be so, well… so happy.
Glenda’s friends had various theories as to why.
Julia, who was married to a slob who didn’t help at home and who lay on the lounge every weekend, thought Glenda was happy because she was divorced.
Adele, an overworked, chain-smoking paralegal with two sex-mad teenage daughters, thought Glenda’s happiness was due to her not having any kids living at home and because she lacked a career.
But although it was true Glenda didn’t have a career, she did have a job. She worked part-time at a real-estate office, managing a portfolio of rental houses, making coffee for clients and answering the phone in her breathy, cheery voice.
