About this ebook

Matete Lerutla, a PhD graduate and a doctorate in business leadership (DBL) student, is known for her passion to encourage, influence and inspire purpose-led and meaningful living. A God-fearing mother to three beautiful daughters, she is a qualified teacher, a clinical psychologist and seasoned human resources executive.

Her professional life began in clinical psychology before pursuing a career in corporate South Africa in organisational effectiveness, talent management, leadership development and organisational transformation.

An academic publisher on African leadership, she is affiliated to the Unisa School of Business Leadership as a researcher in leadership, culture and organisational reformation. When Lerutla is not behind a desk or studying, she invests time at home with her children either indoors or savouring the beauty of South Africa’s outdoors. As both a nature and wine-lover of note, she loves travelling and spending time in the company of her few close friends.

Walking in your Divine Purpose shares Biblical and spiritual principles to benefit every Christian who has a hunger and commitment to embracing their divine calling. Regardless of where you are on your personal journey, this book will ignite your desire to fulfil your commitment and live a purpose-led life.

While corporate South Africa is the context on which Lerutla bases her experience, her shared learning in this book applies to every Christian commissioned to serve God.

‘Embracing your calling is a CHOICE you make to honour God with the gift of life’

    Acknowledgements

A special thanks above all to the Lord Almighty, who created the space and time for me to finally write this book. After almost nine years of procrastination, my hand was forced, and I am grateful for the opportunity presented to be able to write. God is always patient, and HE doesn’t back down!

To my wonderful three girls, your unconditional support, love, encouragement, and personal sacrifices to support my commissioned work is unmeasurable.

    • My late daughter, Makgosi Diako, who was my anchor. She believed in me, she was my cheerleader, and her vision for me and her wishes keep me strong, focused and anchored. Continue resting peacefully, my girl.

    • Amai Diako, thank you for heeding the Holy Spirit two years ago and for passing the message that I should write. Although it took a long time for me to finally honour your prophetic confirmation, we are here now.

    • Keamogetse Diako, your quite spirited nature and support is deeply appreciated. Keep reading!

My spiritual father and mentor, Apostle Victor Mavunga, your wisdom and guidance throughout my commissioned assignments have been a blessing. I will forever be grateful for your time, listening ear and unconditional love.

To my dearest friend and spiritual sister, Zelphinia Howard, through whom I have gained a prayerful extended family. Thank you for the encouragement and for always supporting me to embrace my gifts and to walk in the confidence of my calling.

Lastly but not least, to my late Mom and Dad, your legacies and parenthood live forever. May your beautiful souls continue resting in peace. You are forever appreciated and loved.

    Introduction

    Operating in your anointing

For the most part of my career in corporate, I operated from passion, drive, and an inherent desire to add meaningful value in every role I undertook. I have been fortunate in that almost all of the time, my contributions were fulfilling, and I was blessed with some of the greatest leaders. It was not until I had a full understanding of divine purpose and gifts that my walk shifted, from pilot and auto-delivery to being purposeful and ensuring that whatever role I undertook was aligned to my divine purpose. I became more aware of my gifts, talents, and strengths, and therefore knew what to focus on, while leveraging the gifts of the collective. The recipe of my success has been simple. As I understood who I am, my anointed gifts, and what my purpose in each assignment was, I became more conscious of the Why and How to carry every assignment at hand. I endeavoured to walk in my divine purpose and to gracefully fulfil the task entrusted upon me. This way of work became more liberating, fulfilling, and meaningful.

Operating in one’s anointing is the most rewarding yet challenging experience, especially when assigned to an environment where the norm is to see colleagues in their professional titles and roles, with little to no room for embracing the spiritual gifts and divine callings that respective people carry. I was determined not to lose sight of who I was and what my divine purpose was and therefore I soldiered relentlessly on, with courage and boldness, to serve. What I have learned is that as you embrace your anointing and use your gifts to serve meaningfully in a way that you should, the ease and success with which you carry your duties becomes supernatural. Things fall into place and you get to deliver in a way that seems effortless to the human eye; what is deemed challenging is done with ease. Even in circumstances where you are not provided with resources to carry out your duties, somehow, by supernatural means, you are able to deliver successfully. The supernatural favour that comes upon you will not always, if ever, be recognised by everyone; and as you stay obedient in honouring your divine purpose, blessings and favour fall upon you.

The grace of operating in one’s assignment, while a blessing, presents challenges in the physical because not everyone realises and understands that your ability to deliver is primarily because of your obedience to your calling. When you are in God’s perfect will, in your anointing, the work of your hands is blessed. However, such blessings will or can be overwhelming for those who operate from the flesh, those who rely on their own strengths, worldly achievements, titles and positions to deliver. Your divine success is not comprehensible to them, and as a result, your anointing can or will equally attract jealousy, envy, hatred, misunderstanding, competition and so forth. This is where the challenge comes in as some will fight you in the physical, not understanding that the work of your hands is blessed because of your walk in divine purpose. Unless you fully understand and embrace your anointing, gifts and purpose, it can get very frustrating as you take your place in the field and as you carry out your respective assignments.

You also need to quickly realise that for those who operate from different spiritual realms, your anointing is bound to be too threatening and overwhelming. As light illuminates the darkness, as the stars are visible in the dark, so does a person’s anointing. It lights up regardless of where you find yourself; you cannot dim it, it cannot be shut down because it is divinely in you. Do not try to dim your light, for you to fit in. Not every person you come across in your divine journey will fully embrace and understand you. Some will expect you to dim your light as it turns out to be too bright. Regardless of how much you might want to accommodate their own lights, they will not be satisfied. The encouragement that I give is to never dim your light, never compromise your anointing, and always remember that each person has been given the opportunity and choice to walk in their divine purpose. Always remember that your success as you walk in God’s perfect will, each time and in every season, is a result of your obedience to walk in your divine purpose and anointing.

I have spent most of my working years trying to downplay my gifts and anointing because I could see how they attracted negativity from those who could not understand, especially those who operate from a different spiritual realm. I have learned as well that regardless of how much you try to ‘hide’ and ‘fit in’, your anointing does not dim, the light remains bright. As you try hard to ‘dim’ for others to feel less threatened, the same people will expect you to keep dimming until you get to a point of darkness. They are never satisfied because regardless of how ‘small’ your light or anointing is, it is still too bright and intimidating for those who will never understand.

Walking in your divine purpose, while rewarding, is not a seamless journey. You need to be intentional about embracing your anointing and giving glory to God for making it possible for you to serve him. In this book, I also share some of the benefits and blessings I have experienced as I persevered against all odds. With each chapter focusing on a particular theme, the reader is able to select where to focus, based on what is critical for you at a point in time. In this way, you will be able to go through the contents of the book at your own pace and depending on what would be of meaning and value to you at a given point.
