The internet has become a marketplace dominated by the biggest tech companies, who use our personal information to sell our secrets to the highest bidder. We don’t always know where our data is going, and we don’t always know what buyers are doing with it.

The big tech companies have been collecting our personal information and using it to make it easier for businesses to hook us. This is what Zuboff calls surveillance capitalism.

Companies have intruded into our personal lives without permission or apology for monetary gain, and we have to accept this as a trade-off in order to gain access to the magical world of technology.
