We live in a time of great abundance and opportunity, but also of unprecedented disruption. The best of times and the worst of times.

CEOs and leaders should be willing to give up authority to make a difference. I was able to promote Deloitte while off the clock, and in less than a year, I had developed an informal marketing function at the company. I never let a title stop me from making an impact.

I had excelled at leading without authority at Starwood, but once I had some authority of my own, I didn’t spend as much time building strong relationships as I had at Deloitte.

Leading without authority has never been more important, and the need for it grows more urgent by the day. The consulting group Gartner predicts that by 2028, algorithms will eliminate so many middle-management jobs that work will depend almost entirely upon networks of cross-functional teams.

The old rules of the game aren’t working anymore. But every day, I still see people clinging to those old rules by their fingertips. Why. Because there are no rules to the new game we’re playing, and no manual for how to play the game well.
