I woke up to a beautiful fall morning. As I sat at the breakfast bar, I began to write in my journal. I thought about my life, and the memories came back to me one by one. I felt my heart race and my body become rigid as I remembered the lies and deceit.

I used to always joke that I had a man who loved me unconditionally and didn’t talk back. I would feel safe with him, and he would rescue me from my recurring nightmare of my life.

I had a dream that I was at the Hammer estate, and as I drove into the garage, I saw Grandpa. He was made out of bronze and was the only personal item I had from his estate. I had playfully decorated him with beads, beanie babies, and a Russian army hat.

I was a good girl, but I didn’t give myself credit for surviving. I did everything I was supposed to do, but in the end, I was always abandoned and betrayed. I was treated differently by my family than my brother was.

I was attacked by a spider, and when I reached the house, I ran inside and screamed for my mom. She was the ticket to my safety, and I could feel safe in her arms. I was hysterical.

I had many experiences of betrayal as a child, and as an adult, I would always try to figure out what had gone wrong. I would pray to God to help me, to keep me safe, and make the noise go away.
