Ever since Ben and I started dating, I’ve been wondering how you two have been able to remain friends. The question popped out of my mouth before I could stop myself, but if pressed, I would blame the champagne we’d downed together as we lazed in the shade of the back patio. Ben, Jasmine, and I had been friends since childhood, but Ben and Jaz dated for a while after graduating high school.

I snuggled closer to my now boyfriend Ben and sent a glance at my best friend Jaz. She had always told me everything, except after calling off her relationship with Ben, I felt something was missing. My eyes sought hers, and she slid her warm gaze from me, exchanging a look with Ben.

Sitting up, I pushed off him, trying to catch the look between them.

Okay, what are you not telling me?

Jaz unfolded herself from the hammock where she had been playing hide n seek with the sunshine as she’d gently rocked from sunshine to shade. I think it’s time we cut you off from the champagne.

She lifted the bottle from the table in front of me, and she poured the rest into her own glass, lifting it to me as she took a sip. Her gaze held mine as she swallowed. Her dark eyes simmered with something I sometimes caught out of the corner of my eye when we spent time together.

What if I wanted more? Ben grumbled next to me.

Is that what you said to Lila after she stopped kissing the girl at the bar? Jaz deadpanned.

Lila is right here, and I make my own decisions about who I kiss and when. I pulled myself out of the couch, opened the back door, and walked to the kitchen. Ben and I had an agreement about hook-ups, and he didn’t mind having a front-row seat to my shenanigans. We’ve got other drinks.
