Chapter One

I rolled over in the empty bed and stared out of the window. I was groggy, and a pounding headache overcame my usual bright and sunny outlook on life. I turned in the soft cotton sheets to see half of the bed that was mostly occupied by my husband for so many years. It was rare that he was not by my side, but after his actions the night before at the gala, I had assumed I would be wandering home alone again.

It had not always been the case. When we were newlyweds, I could not get enough of my dear Jackson, and he was all over me. We were happy and loved up in the safety of our cocoon. As the years wore on and we had our own family, a daughter we named Bella, things got harder.

She was our pride and joy. Nothing could rival the love that I felt for that gorgeous girl — my precious baby. Not even the love I felt for my husband. I could tell that both of us would do anything for her. Anything to protect her future and make her happy. Anything to keep us together for her sake, if not our own.

It was the kind of thing that was almost expected in this day and age. Most marriages ended in divorce, and, especially where my young family was concerned, I was determined to do everything in my power to prevent this from happening to us. Jackson and I could work through our differences. That was why I had proposed such a drastic plan.

Coming at a time when we struggled with our love for each other, I knew I had to do something. Anything. I saw him looking at other women the way he used to look at me. With that, l had the thought I needed, pushing the notion into the forefront of my mind. We had friends that had tried it; for some, it worked, and some it drove a wedge between them. I could only hope for the former.

One evening, as we sat at the dining table facing each other, I pushed the food around my plate. We were finally alone, Bella had moved out, and it was the best time to try and rekindle our love when it was just the two of us once more.
