    Author's Foreword

I’ve been where you are. I have felt the pain of being alone and wondering if there was ever going to be someone for me to love in this lifetime. Looking back, I wish someone had told me the secret to true love. I wish I had known then how simple it is to manifest love when your heart is ready. That is the reason I wrote this book, so that you can have the knowledge I didn’t, and hopefully avoid the emotional rollercoaster that usually comes with trying to create a relationship.

I owe one person a big thank you in my inspiration for this book - my wonderful husband, Seth. You showed me what love truly is and I’m grateful every day that I get to spend eternity with you. I love you.

    Chapter 1: LOA Introduction

It happened. I was rejected... again. Sitting alone on my bed, I couldn’t help but sob into my pillow, clutching it for dear life and hoping I would finally wake up from my seemingly endless nightmare.

Just a year ago, I had gotten back in contact with the man I had been admiring for three years in college. For anonymity purposes, we’ll call him James. He and I were the best of friends, and though we’d discussed our feelings before, he had told me twice that he only wished for us to be friends, nothing more. Since then, our friendship still remained strong. He graduated college and I spent one more year at my University before calling it quits and returning home. Dropping out of college was a difficult decision, but I couldn’t shake the feeling that something good was calling me home, and that if I stayed in college, the path led to only more disconnection with my true dreams. But more on that later.

A year after living at home until I could rent my own place, I got the urge to text my long lost friend. James had been on my mind lately, which was strange because we hadn’t spoken, much less thought of one another, in over a year. I texted him a simple hello and asked how he was doing. To my surprise, I found, he had been thinking of me too, and a sudden spark arose between us that was much stronger than our days in college. He lived out in Texas while I was in Washington state, so while we couldn’t yet travel to see one another, a long-distance relationship started to blossom. That was the happiest I had been in over five years.

About three months later, I thought everything in my life was perfect. James and I were texting and video chatting all the time, even daily, and he even kept hinting that marriage could possibly be in our future. One night, I hopped on the video chat for our evening date and I started flirtatiously hinting back about a future marriage. James gave a sly smile on screen and paused for a moment before saying the five words that made my heart sink lower than ever before.

    I’m keeping my options open.

At first, I thought this was a joke. I giggled and let his words roll off of me.

I know, I shrugged, realizing seconds later that I should have reacted differently.

We ended that chat on a cheerful note, but I couldn’t sleep that night. I knew in my heart that something was different from before. Something in James’ heart had changed and there was nothing I could do to stop it. Naive as I was, though, we kept texting here and there for the next few days.

A week after the video chat, I woke up one morning and saw that his profile status switched to In a Relationship. On his page was a picture of him and a girl I’d never seen before, happily holding one another. Needless to say, I felt betrayed, but even more, I felt used and absolutely heartbroken.

It took me quite a while to get over James, but I did. He was the closest I’d ever been to
