WILLOW

Slap. Slap. Slap.

That’s the sound of my Nikes hitting the asphalt. My thighs and ass jiggle with each reverb. I feel the eyes follow me all the way through town and out of it and I’ve already answered more questions than I like.

Yes, I do this every day. No, I’m not tired of it. No, I’m not going to stop. Yes, I’m aware I look fine just the way I am.

God bless them. They’re so sweet, but they are all so fucking nosy. I don’t know how Jen does it.

I grew up in a small town. Way out west in sunny South Cali. After high school, I got a scholarship and escaped three thousand miles across the country to New York. I haven’t stopped running since.

That scholarship took me to Columbia University’s J-School. Columbia took me to the New York Telegraph. The Telegraph handed me what may be my biggest story. That big story landed me here. Podunk in the middle of Nowhere, Upstate New York. Thank you very much.

Through it all, Jen has been a doll. Jen’s my roomie from Columbia. When I called and explained what I needed, Jen hooked me up with a place to live and a cover job at her family’s newspaper.

I’m supposed to be the Shelton Courier’s News and Current Affairs reporter. That is such a yawn fest in this hotbed of activity, I actually have time to do what I’m really here for.

And that’s talk to one man. Cole Casey.

Now, I’ve met Mr. Casey already, mind you. I tried to cut across his property on my way back to town last week. He chased me off with a shotgun. So much for first impressions.

To hear the good folk of Shelton tell it, he’s been meaner than a junkyard dog since the death of his son. I can understand that and normally I stay away from people who fire warning shots at me, but I’ve got a job to do.

This morning’s run, in fact, has been dedicated to thinking of ways I can get myself in front of Cole Casey to ask him some questions.

I’m drawing up on the outskirts of his property and I speed up just a little. I don’t want to linger. I remember what happened.
