Kundalini Yoga, which is similar to other forms of yoga, was first developed in India. This type is thought to have been primarily practiced by the warrior classes. As it can help build inner strength and outer strength, this type o yoga has been said to be very effective. Kundalini Yoga crossed over the ocean and arrived in North America in the late 1960s. Yogi Bhabajan is responsible for bringing it to North America after experiencing the hippie revolution. Kundalini Yoga has exploded, with its roots in Los Angeles and New York City. It has become a global phenomenon for anyone who is looking for inner peace and wholeness.
Kundalini yoga combines three of the oldest schools of yogic practices. Kundalini yoga is in particular influenced by aspects of the Bhakti Raja, Shakti, and Shakti yoga schools. It is influenced by the Bhakti yoga school of yoga's philosophy that chanting should be done with devotion. Kundalini, based on the Raja philosophy, also incorporates the practice of meditation and the philosophy that one can have control over their mental and physical bodies. Kundalini Yoga borrows from the Shakti school yoga the idea that one's breath is an expression or one's strength.
The Kundalini style of yoga, which focuses on exploring and coming to terms in your place in this universe, is generally described as one that uses breathing techniques and movements to encourage this realization. Kundalini yoga is described by those who have attended Kundalini classes as a form catharsis. It is comparable to deep psychotherapy. The Kundalini practice is for people who are seeking to realize their creative potential. This person wants to free themselves of all karma so they can fulfill their life purpose.
Kundalini Yoga practices are dependent on a few aspects. They are, in order of importance, the breath, posture, and chakras. These three aspects together allow one to experience an euphoric, quite emotional epiphany regarding their place in this universe. This epiphany is what the Kundalini Yogai (Fierer, 2020) aims for. This moment of realization or epiphany is known as the Kundalini awakening.
There is a Snake in My Spine
The metaphor of the coil snake describes the philosophy behind Kundalini. Kundalini can be translated from Sanskrit to mean a kind of energy of living that grows and develops at the base of the spine. This energy is intended to be stretched and spread upwards through the spine and into the rest. Kundalini also comes from the term Kunda, which loosely translates to the coiled serpent. This snake represents the individual energy within the spine. As they go through Kundalini practices, they will uncoil this snake so that it can stretch from the base and up to the top. Once the snake is fully stretched, it allows the individual's energy sources to be used to their maximum potential, allowing them to attain this moment of awakening.
When the individual is out balance and is disconnected from the universe, it is believed that the snake has kinked or recoiled at certain points of the spine. The snake's position will show the chakra or the aspect of their life that they lack. This lack or state of disconnection doesn't have to be spiritual. People may feel 'blocked or dissatisfied in certain areas of life, but not necessarily spiritually.
While chakras will be described in more detail, they can be used to illustrate the effects of imbalance on a person's life. If your throat chakra does not function well, meaning you are unable communicate with others your opinions, ideas and feelings, it is likely that the Kundalini Snake in your spine has become kinked. You may also feel restricted sexually and passionately if your sacral chakra isn't working well.
However, you can coil and kink the snake in many places. This affects multiple chakras. It may also cause blockages in your ability to perform certain tasks.
Dangers
Kundalini yoga is an intense practice that can lead to a deeper understanding of your purpose and place in the universe. Hanson, 2020 outlines some possible dangers.
Dangers of Physical Injury
Kundalini yoga poses the first danger. There are risks associated with Kundalini yoga, such as lightheadedness or difficulty in breathing. To ensure that your body can take on the Kundalini journey, it's recommended that you consult a doctor before starting. Kundalini must be practiced safely and only when you feel well.
Anxiety and Dangers
A Kundalini awakening will require you to let go everything you are most comfortable with in your daily life. This is because what is most comfortable in a person's life is actually an obstacle to their ability to reach a higher level of consciousness. Undoubtedly, anxiety will build up in your body as these comforts are removed. Most people can manage anxiety and it doesn't affect their lives. Kundalini may cause anxiety in people with an anxiety disorder. To ease your anxiety and to help you through the times when you feel anxious, Kundalini will take away that anxiety.
