Chapter 1: History Of Kundalini
Origins of Kundalini
At this time, Kundalini's origin is still unknown. It is believed that Kundalini's first mention was in a compilation of writings known as Upanishads. According to the records, Kundalini existed before physical yoga was created as a science in spiritual philosophy and energy. Sitting down to hear teachings of master
can be translated into Upanishads
. This is likely something you've experienced before with yoga.
Masters would often sit down with their students during these times and share their spiritual visions. This was a very popular Vedic tradition. Over time, Kundalini Yoga was developed to further this practice. However, this type was not taught publicly because it was necessary to manifest the Master's visions. Kundalini Yoga was a series of years-long initiations that students had to endure before they were able learn from a master about the spirit and the bodies.
Kundalini remained a secret for many years. It was kept from the public by masters who decided who should be taught. This is why it was impossible to teach outside the secret Indian society. They believed society was not ready for Kundalini's powerful knowledge. Yogi Bhajan was a holy Sikh rebel. He would revolutionize Kundalini in 1968.
Yogi Bhajan
Yogi Bhajan's help, most Americans wouldn't know what Kundalini is. Yogi Bhajan was visiting California in 1960s according to history. We were able to witness a revival of hippie culture. He also saw his Sikh family. He saw that many people in the hippies were looking for God through expanded consciousness. He also discovered that some were trying to achieve this through drugs. He was determined to guide their spirituality. However, Kundalini Yoga was banned. The vision finally came to pass.
It all happened during a 1968 Los Angeles vacation. While meditating, the vision came to him of a new kind of spirituality. This spirituality would blend his Kundalini wisdom with modern practices of spiritual enlightenment. This was the time he began to spread Kundalini's teachings to the West. He believed everyone had the right to be happy, holy, and healthy. He was inspired to move to California to promote 3HO, the Healthy, Happy and Holy Organization, and his Kundalini research institution.
Yogi Bhajan, through his institute, would teach approximately 8,000 Kundalini Yoga Classes. He actually takes credit for starting the first Kundalini yoga training program. Many of his students would later open their own yoga studios as a result of his teachings. Kundalini classes have become a worldwide phenomenon. Some of these classes are even taught by Yogi Bhajan's direct students.
Yogi Bhabajan's influence extends far beyond his yoga practice. He was also known to have worked with international governments to bring mindfulness, peace, and calm to large-scale world affairs. He was determined to help create a more responsible and compassionate society through mindfulness and compassion. These ideals were complemented by several books. He would leave behind five Aquarian Age sutras. They were:
Recognize the person you are sharing your life with is you
Every block is possible!
Or you will misunderstand.
The cosmos will direct your path if you chant the cosmos
You can start when you are under pressure.
Yoga helps you to be more conscious
Before you can truly understand Kundalini Yoga it is essential that you know its philosophy. We mentioned that the Upanishads are the source of this philosophy. Students could discover the truth of reality through spirituality and the oral teachings.
This was all taught to students by their masters. These visions were passed on to the students, which was the first step towards Eastern spirituality. This concept is also rooted in traditions like Hinduism and Buddhism, which both have their origins from the Upanishads.
Kundalini Yoga of Awareness is meant to awaken the Higher Self. This idea suggests that each person is an energy source for Brahman. It is a god-like creative consciousness. Kundalini allows people the ability to disconnect from their Ego, which is a worldly idea, and connect to the Universal Brahman.
Yes, you did read that right. Kundalini Yoga aims to connect to God. The traditional teachings of God are not about a person floating in the air. Instead, God's essence can be described as our own essence. Instead of being a human being. God is just an energy-based creative consciousness. God is already a part and we can connect with him. Kundalini will teach you how to let go of a false Ego and reconnect to the true reason for your existence.
Kundalini, Medical Explanation
When a spiritual concept is used in Medicine, it becomes very interesting. Kundalini was thought by Carl Jung as a way of describing our experiences through unconscious. Jung would use Kundalini to explain the interaction between the unconscious, conscious, and trance states. He believed Yoga was a means to rule the body and the unconscious.
Recently, meditation has been rediscovered by the medical profession. This may have contributed to the popularity of spiritual practices. It has been found that through Kundalini awakening, it could connect to a physio-psychospiritual transformation. Near-death experiences are a source of many studies. They show patients who experienced motor, sensory, and mental symptoms. We will learn more about this in the future. To help you better understand Kundalini awakening, learn about the Chakras.
Chapter 2: What Is Kundalini Yoga And What Are Its Goals?
