Donald Jacob Uitvlugt lives on neither coast of the United States, but mostly in a haunted memory palace of his own design. His short fiction has appeared in numerous print and online venues, including Cirsova magazine and in the Flame Tree Press anthology Murder Mayhem. He also writes the on-going webserial Jiao Tu’s Endeavour, the first story arc of which has been collected in the volume The Kidnapped Mousling. About the Author
The first thing Sue Taylor noticed when she locked her car and headed for her job at the Park Meadow Neighborhood Center was the cats. Every morning they lounged on the porches and windowsills of the buildings, rooted lazily in open trashcans, lapped at chipped bowls placed out for them. She shook her head as she pushed open the Center’s door with its merry jangle of bells. After walking from her car to her desk with an apathetic entourage of cats for the past two weeks, she finally commented on the fact.
For God’s sake, don’t say anything to them about it.
Jennifer was Sue’s boss and the only other salaried staff at the Center. They’re superstitious about the cats. I’ve never seen anything like it.
It’s okay. I won’t. Besides, I like cats.
